  • ?? about upcoming storm

With the upcoming storm I have a question. With Rita my fish survived 10 days with no electricity. But my tank was not overstocked at that time.
My question is How long can fish live in an overstocked tank with no electricity?
I don't have a generator or battery air pumps but I am working on a back up plan. Just need to know how long I have. Thanks.

Not long if it's over stocked and underfiltered.

I have a line on a few large automotive jump boxes which have 110/120 outlets that you could run pumps on for quite a while. I just need to get out there and take some pictures and inventory of everything and I will be offering them here.

Ever left a bag of fish in the car while you went shopping in August ???
On a hot day with no water circulation, you'll be lucky if they last a day.
'Dear Lord,' the minister began, with arms extended toward heaven and a rapturous look on his upturned face. 'Without you, we are but dust ...'
He would have continued but at that moment my very obedient daughter who was listening leaned over to me and asked quite audibly in her shrill little four-year old girl voice, 'Mom, what is butt dust?'

I think, the answer to this question is more complicated. First, what is the capacity of your tank, second how many and what kind of fish you keep in it, third do you have plants and so on. From my experience I can tell you that I can leave my 90G tank without filtration or light or AC for at least a week without any harm to fish. However my tank is not overpopulated and I don't keep sicklids. I don't worry about the hurricane as far as the fish are concerned.

Plants will act just like any other fish when they are not photosynthesizing.

              Re: ?? about upcoming storm

One is 160 gallons with about 30 cichlids. I run 2 hob emperor 400, and 2 rena xp3's on the tank.
The next is a 90 gallon planted tank. It has 6 angelfish, 1 otto cat, 8 rosie barbs, 3 cory cats, 2 algea eaters (simese or chinese can't remember), 6 apisto's, 2 rams, 4 loaches. (Rena xp3 & 1 maxi jet 1200 powerhead)
              28 gallon, 8 guppies, 1 african dwarf frog, 2 loaches, 2 paradise fish, 2 kribs. (eheim 2213)
120 gallon saltwater 2 green spotted puffers, 1 wrasse, 1 lawnmower blenny, 1 stars & stripes puffer. (wet/dry with mag 9.5 pump, 2 maxi jet 1200 powerheads, 1 hob whisper 60, 1 hob protein skimmer 1025 gph.

I know at least once I left the 160 pumps turned off by accident for at least 2 days, no fish died during that time.

I thought you had one tank

                Ok here you go

                Acadmey sell battery operated pumps...

                4 on the 160
                2 on the 90
                1 on the 28

AS FOR THE SALT I WOULD DO ABOUT 5..SINCE YOU LOOKING AT SALT LEVEL INCREASE DO TO WATER LOST.

                  Re: ?? about upcoming storm

For the saltwater fish I was going to bring them to the lfs, they run a generator during times like this. This is of course a well trusted lfs.
I'll go to academy tommorow and pick up some pumps if they have enough. Petsmart only had 2. Hopefully this storm won't come our way. The only problem is I won't be home to turn them on until at least 12-24 hours after the storm. My concern is will the batteries last long enough for me to turn them on before we leave or should I wait until I get back? Will I have enough time before they all start dying?

If you want to wait till this weekend or something I will be going to take inventory of those battery jump boxes.

They will probably run your filters for most of the day more less an airpump. Cost will probably be around $40-60

Get with me once you do your inventory, I'm off on sunday and I can make a quick trip to houston. Either way I'm sure I'll be heading that way, don't know if I can locate enough battery pumps in the area to run my tanks.

Ek, change of plans. We are leaving Sat. night or Sunday morning. Hubby said he will buy a generator and bring it home.  I apperiacte your help. We are coming home as soon as the storm is over. He has a pass to get back into town, so we shouldn't have any problems.
