    Re: ramshorn snails

Yep, I feel your pain. We have the same problem. Thing is these things lay eggs everywhere. First step is Clown Loaches. A group is best. Next Clean your filters very good. The snail eggs get into the filtration. You should also take out the aquascaping and wash off any snails and eggs and Vacume the substrate really good mixing it up as good as you can. It's a pain but these things are really hard to get rid of.

I would be careful with the snail killers. Most that I ave found have copper in them and you don't want that in your tank.

    Hope this helps.

      Re: ramshorn snails

I have some Assassin snails that seem to really like ramshorns, but I don't have any to spare yet.  I also advise staying away from snail killers.  From what I understand the residual copper traces can linger for a long time, if not forever.

        Loaches do a good job.
I recommend either clown or my favorite the yoyo loaches.   Those guys will devastate a tank of them quick.

Now what Nancy said is correct...   Loaches are NOT hardy fish ie., no copper in the water... so make sure that you do a MASSIVE water change ie 99% water change (ie leave the fish enough to barely swim, and then refill your tank before I would put in loaches.. you want to make sure there is as little as absolutely possible copper in that tank.

I agree with guygeek and if a couple resurface just grab em and throw em down the toilet or on the frying pan... mmmm ramshorn.

            Re: ramshorn snails

I was overrun with the buggers, in every tank, a while back.
I just did a constant net gathering of every one I saw, and after not too long there weren't any more. To this day I rarely see a trash snail, and NO Ramshorns.
I keep a few differnt kinds of snails in my tanks, so Loaches weren't an option.

                Re: ramshorn snails

What has worked for me with MTS snails is dose two days in a row of HAd-A-Snail, then waterchange, and dose with Coppersafe for atleast a month.

Clean everything, and throw away gravel.  Or..microwave it.  I've done it..

                  I wouldn't use copper.

Ramshorn is not as bad as MTS so collect it and share it with those that think of them differently!

i might be wrong but tatoo said ramshorn but i think he meant mts. if it's rams horn the puffer would wipe them out in no time. if it's mts then the puffer is not going to work. airportjunkie had one crack a tooth on them !@#$%&MTS and die a miserable death. i slowly remove all substarte over a month and put in buckets. and boil it and slowly add it back during water changes in the next weeks. bleach will NOT kill them.

I got mine at Fish Ranch back in 2000 for 10.99 when it was marble sized. A few months ago, Fondren Fish 'N' Pets had 2 inch ones for about 24.00. Anyone know how they did  post Ike?
