Hey guys...so I have a question...has anyone every over oxygenated their water and killed some of their fish? Well I have an aerator on the tank but no valve on it to regulate how much air is in it. I let it run usually all day...until tonight when I was reading something I noticed porky (white cloud minnow) swimming upside down until he died before my eyes. He is the third casualty out of five white cloud mountain minnows I have bought. Downstairs in the 58G this has never happened. I have not lost any of my tetras since I started the hobby in February but these poor mountains are just not doing well. It's a possibility they were sick when I got them from Petsmart..(the only fish store CS has). Just makes me sad.

Re: Over Oxygenating you aquarium?
I thought fish in the minnow family prefer cooler water with a higher oxygen content? maybe get one of those longer airstones or bubble wall to distribute the air bubbles better. I Have a luft air diffuser I got at the last HAS auction you can have. I could not get the bubbles evenly distributed, but it can be done, just needs more patience than I have right now.PLECOS SUCK!

Re: Over Oxygenating you aquarium?
Yea I thought so too...since crayfish love the cooler water and higher oxygen content as well. Right now the air stone is about 5" long..distributes the bubbles evenly enough. Just such a drag...I'll take the diffuser though and give that a try. Oden seemed angry with me at first for giving him tank mates...although since three have departed he's being more social again...Katamari Damacy...That's just how I roll...

I seriously doubt you could have over oxygenated the water with just an aerator.
If you were dosing hydrogen peroxide or playing with an ozonizer maybe....
Probably weak or fish caught with cyanide or maybe its just too concentrated so flow is too strong....but then again they are minnows which come from cold fast streams.700g Mini-Monster tank

Re: Over Oxygenating you aquarium?
I don't believe you can over-oxygenate your water. Fish respire at the rate they need oxygen. When the O2 content of the water is low, fish will gill rapidly. When it's high they gill slower. Since fish of the same species are dying, I'd suspect a disease or parisite in the group.

Re: Over Oxygenating you aquarium?
I have 2 large airstones running off an oldie but goodie WISA air pump. I have a large amount of bubbles in my 180g moba tank. The bubbles and my dual eheim pipe jets do a good job circulating my water.
No problems at all. In fact, my mobas love swimming through the bubbles.180g Oceanic w/colony of 8 WC Moba Fronts (1m/7f) purchased from TNT Cichlids in Jan '05 & numerous fry. 1 F1 adult moba male. 2 2217 Eheims, 2 6080 Tunze Streams, WISA airpump, single stage Johnson ETC.....fishkeeping since 1988.

Re: Over Oxygenating you aquarium?
Yea I thought it wasn't possible either...I feel better about it now. I was feeling rather guilt beforehand...Geoff I went to that petsmart right by 6 behind Cheddars. Two are left...we'll see what happens. Its a drag! I knotted the line going to the stone which helped reduce the bubbles but they're still strong. I like having lots of them because it helps keep a good current flowing through the tank so it filters better.Katamari Damacy...That's just how I roll...

Re: Over Oxygenating you aquarium?
if you want to reduce the flow even more you can tie multiple knots... or pull the one you did tie tighter...
or you can dig thru under my tank and I'm pretty sure I've got a valve or 2 in there...
