  • Marineland emperor 400 question...

I have two marineland emperor 400's that I got as a package deal not knowing if they even worked.  They both seem a bit old and used.  Well, after cleaning them up a bit and installing new media I was able to get one up and running perfectly - very quiet and running strong.  The other is lagging big time.  The spray bars for the bio-wheel are working fine it seems but the flow is very very low.  Could it have something to do with the impellar??  Is it worth messing with, or just buy a new one??  I know they aren't too too expensive.

    Thanks!

I think it is worth messing with... especially if you'll use it.

Here is what I would do. You have one working perfectly... start switching out parts until you figure out the problem on the slower one. Then either clean, fix, or replce it.

Dorothy : How can you talk if you haven't got a brain?
Scarecrow: I don't know... But some people without brains do an awful lot of talking... don't they?
Dorothy: Yes, I guess you're right.

Are you hearing any noise from the one that has the low flow?  Our 400's usually make a lot of noise when the impeller isn't seated right or is torn up.

Yes, it is considerably noisy compared to the one that's running.  When I removed the impeller it looked ok...  I can try to reseat it and see if that works.

If that doesn't work, City Pets is usually really good about letting you bring back stuff if it doesn't work.  You could go in for an impeller and tell them you think this might resolve it, but if it doesn't could you bring the impeller back and get an Emperor 400 using the credit from the impeller.  They are usually okay with that.

Since you said the filter with the low output is noisy, I would remove the impeller from the one that is working properly and place it into the bad filter. If the bad filter starts working properly then you've found your issue. Then you can simple pick up a new impeller at City Pets or Xtreme Fish and Pets for about $10.00.

you may have done this but clean it very very good. I have notice from time to time snails will seat them selves in the impellor slot, or small pebbles causine the impellor or perhaps the magnet not to spin freely. You may have to shake to ensure all is out of the filter. I own 4 maybe 5 emp400 and they are all over 2 years old and work 100%. just keep them clean and free of small pebble and snails and your good to go.
