seting up tank, what to protect the bottom of the tank?

What would be better to use, an undergravel filter base, or the egg crate light diffuser from Lowe's to protect the bottom of the tank?
I'm using gravel. The undergravel filter I already have, the light diffuser I would have to buy.

It depends on whether you are going to use your UGF, and if it would provide enough filtration for whatever fish you will be keeping.

I personally use egg crate diffusers in all my tanks.

If you are planning to use the UGF as just a support/protector then don't, it will form a dead pocket and become really nasty/bad for the tank.
