I have heaters in all of my tanks.. I prefer that all of my tanks run around 80 degrees.  Stable temp makes for stable environments..

My fish room was 88 this morning.  Had to crank the space heater down lower.   None of my fish seemed distressed and my orange dragon betta had built a really big nest.....  I think he is planning a hot time in the spawn tank tonight.

He would have continued but at that moment my very obedient daughter who was listening leaned over to me and asked quite audibly in her shrill little four-year old girl voice, 'Mom, what is butt dust?'

I've been working with this same issue... haven't started running the heater yet... so in the mornings its usually in the 60s in the house and the tanks seem to be staying upper 60s low 70s... which is cooler then I want... I'm thinking I might wrap a towel around the sides and back of the tanks to help insulate them.

how accurate are the sticker thermometers that stick on the outside of the glass?  I've been hesitant to mess with my temps too much, I would think those thermometers are pretty heavily influenced by the ambient temp.

What kind of thermometers do y'all recomend?

Re: How do you keep your fish warm on a cold winter night ?

I have a dual (indoor/outdoor) digital in my fishroom next to the window (sensor goes through the window frame and is mounted on the outside wall)
and a BIG 12" diameter analog thermometer on the opposite wall (got it from Leslie's pool supply)
and every third tank or so I have an old SS hang on the rim gage or a new suction cup white plastic gage for actual water temp.
Tried the stick on gages and had too many of them fail on me.

Re: How do you keep your fish warm on a cold winter night ?

The lights on my tanks pretty much keep them in check. I have metal halides on my big tank. I have to worry about it getting to hot versus to cold.

On the other small tanks, I just watch them closer. They dont have heaters on them either. I have had heaters malfunction and before the kids told me the temps were in the 95 degree range.

I have thermometers in each tank and we just watch them when we think there is going to be an issue.

Even with high lighting I would use a heater to keep the temps more stable... I had more lighting over my little 30g cube then some use to light their whole house with and still had a heater on that tank just to keep the fluctuations minimal.

As for temps.... you also need to be careful with your thermometers.... I have seen coralife, jebo, odyssea and even the std. glass tube thermometers all fail!
