You will probably get many differing opinions on this. My personal experience leans towards not putting both in the same tank, at least not a 55. One of the main reasons is Angels are more aggressive eaters and will push the Discus out of the way at feeding time. Also, Angels may carry diseases that do not affect them as adversely as they will Discus.
As to the number you can keep in a 55 if you decide to accept this mission ( mission impossible music in the background – but not meant as a deterrent ), you need to consider that both Angels and Discus need about 10 gallons each when fully grown. I’ve found that Discus do better in groups of four or more so you need to add that into your equation.
I have tried putting the two together and my spoiled Discus did not take kindly to the additional tankmates. Others, however, have had great success with the combination.

I have had great success with keeping discus & angels in same tank from a 30 hex to a 180. I also had both types of fish lay eggs in the community tank as well.
To avoid aggression spread the food out when eating & not in one spot.
Once the fish grow out they will require lots of space to move around. So no more then 4 discus with 4 angels. Try not to put to much decoration in the tank as it does take up space it the water.
Make sure you treat for diseases for both kinds of fish before putting them together.

What is an avrage price for Discus and Angelfish in a petstore?
Thanks for all of the info! :)
I highly recommend Houston Aquarium Warehouse for Discus. Price is on the mark too. Bought 12 from Dan and never have an issue. I prefer a one species tank but hey, that's my preference. Good Luck on your venture.
It depends on the size and type, but yes, $100 is not usual for a large, really nice Discus. I would also advise you to give Dan a call and see what he has available. He often has some smaller ones for less, or you can check out his website at:
It's always a nice visit whether you leave with fish or not, but if it's a long drive, you might want to call first. It does show some $25 - $40 each on his website.
Edit: Sometimes a few will show up at an auction. I'm not sure if any will be at the HAS auction Sunday, but there's always a good selection of Angels.

The only thing I'd add is that I definitely wouldn't put juvie discus in the same tank with adult angels. Juvie discus are very easily intimidated and as Szidlon pointed out, will get out-competed for food quickly. I have kept adult discus with adult angels and didn't have any problems. Dan has some beautiful discus. I bought my wild Greens from him for $65.00 each.

What are the facts? Again and again and again--what are the facts? Shun wishful thinking, ignore devine revelation, forget what "the stars foretell", avoid opinion, care not what the neighbors think, never mind the unguessable "verdict of history"--what are the facts, and to how many decimal places? You pilot always into an unknown future; facts are your only clue.
I currently have my Discus and an angel in the same tank as the angle is crashing for a couple of more days till I make sure its new home is safe. But the Leopard Discus and the Golden angel seem to be best friends they swim around the tank close together a lot of the times with no aggression that I have seen. The only aggression in fact is the leopard picking on the yellow crystal discus. But I will second or third or whatever the complements about Dan. He has some of the best Discus I have ever seen and reasonably priced and they are mostly Houston tap raised so little problems with our water. Plus he seems to love shooting the breeze with you about tanks.
