i aree with edmlfc on the high brackish part.....i tried 2 of them and lost them to not knowing this in the beginning....so yes you will need to get it another tank and make it brackish and then you can slowly convert to full salt ....but since it's been in the freshwater acclimate it slowly to the brackish and the full salt.....they are sooooo cute.....
good luck with all of your fishies though....nice tank....

What is the best sized tank & filter system for reasonable $$ for this little guy?
I've grown quite fond of this little dude so I hope I can find something appropriate for me & him...!

the cool thing is that you can set him up in a small tank now....and when he outgrows it then consider bigger....
you can put him now in a 10-20 gallon brackish tank.....he'll be small for a spell....then you can get him something bigger....he sure is cute....they do have  a tendency to steal your heart really fast these little guys......

They require 30 gallons per puffer. You can use a canister or a HOB. The more filtration the better. For example I use an eheim 2213 on a 28 gallon and a sponge filter. You can use your old media from your established tank for an instant cycle on the new tank and set it up as freshwater. Once it's set up, raise the specific gravity by at least 0.002 per week, aiming for 1.015. You will need sea salt and a refractometer or hydrometer. If you get a hydrometer make sure it starts at .001, most will start at 1.011. Take your time doing this, it's not a rush. If you raise it by .002 each week it will not crash your tank and you will still have good bacteria. Puffers are sensitive to ammo. and nitrites, keep a close eye on your water conditions and do water changes as necessary.

For more information read this article:
A house without a puffer is not a Home.
