i only used 2 bags, 100lbs and i have a 2.5" layer from that amount. so 2 bags will do u fine, imo.

its ok :?  i wouldnt really say it is a particularly good plant substrate. but for like low light hardy ferns, ie; java ferns, and java moss, also maybe like, someither hardy plants. but the main thing is, is that its not a really nutrient rich substrate.

                    Re: pool filtered sand

The dubs I have in my tank are swimming on PFS, and they dont' seem to mind moving it around at all. It is clean too for the most part, right from the bag.

sorry, no offense i meant guys/ and gals.

strongly considering converting over to sand. My blue rainbows just seem as if they would show up so much lighter and nicer over the pfs. The color up now but more so under the light. yea im switching over tomorrow, not sure i want the task of taking the gravel out and swapping but what the heck.

                          Re: pool filtered sand

                          update:

PFS has been added and i was truely amazed at how while i was cleaning it, the water that was overflowing was so clean and sand free. Hardly any clouding of the water, the tank was actually clear by the next morning. I did run the emp 400 but the tank was merely cloudy from removing the rocks that where in there.

Far as teh fish whoooow Babyy, the blue rainbows look awesome. I would snap and pic but they are so busy doing the shimmy shimmy yaa, and going from one side to the other they hardly ever be still. Their color is truely amazing, so amazing i was able to tell I have an Kalambo that has been mixed in with my group. That sand really brings out the color, then its crazy cheap.

thanks for all the good response and encouragement to switch over, I am sure glad i did.

In the mean time i will try and get some pics going, my poor camera skills wont due them any justice though so i must warn you ahead of time.

                            Re: pool filtered sand

There is one negative point that should be considered when thinking of using sand, and that is the good chance of it ending up in your filtration system.

The stronger filter you have, the more sand you will end up cleaning out of your cans....
