    Re: Aquarium volume calculator

Great link, I think sometimes people disagree in gallonage because they not using the same measurements, i/d or o/d, I think I said that right.  Going to measure my hex's later and put a note on the tank somewhere since I can never seem to remember what size they are   .

Yep, most manufacturers use outside dimensions, including trim.
But for chemicals & medications, you should use inside dimensions.

He would have continued but at that moment my very obedient daughter who was listening leaned over to me and asked quite audibly in her shrill little four-year old girl voice, 'Mom, what is butt dust?'

              Re: Aquarium volume calculator

Now I'm getting a headache from all this thinking.  So, if the inside dimensions are what you go by when medicating or treating water that would only be accurate in a bare tank.  Since anything you put in the tank will cause some amount of water displacement, if you are not using a bare tank, you are still only close to accurate, which only counts when playing with horseshoes and hand grenades.

So, if when filling up your tank, you put only a portion of the water in, enough to cover the plethora of stuff you are going to add, you can measure the water level then and make a note on the side of the tank, put your stuff in and remeasure to determine the amount of water displaced.  This would only be an issue for a true purist, which I'm not.  I just like to think of things for other people to try   .

move the sick or injured fish to a bare Isolation tank.

                  Re: Aquarium volume calculator

Well, this would also apply to gallonage in healthy tanks being treated with non medicinal chemicals.  I don't know why I'm concerned, instructions, like rules, are something I am not good about following   .

I treat my water in a bare 55g drum before I do a water change.
Anything else is just pre meds and I only use half strength so...... Horseshoes, hand grenades & nuclear weapons.

when you first set up the tank fill it with everything first and use a flow meter when you fill it, then you will know exactly how much water there is
