  • Brackish Plants for Puffer Tank?

Just got my first little spotted puffer in a 10 gal.  It is freshwater right now but I would like to gradually move to a brackish water, possibly even later going full marine later.  Is there plants that I can get that will live in brackish water?  Also when this little fella gets bigger would it be okay with some live rock and safe around coral?  I should have a good supply of pond snail for it to eat from the pond/fountain near my office.  If I have enough snails, will it eat an all snail diet?  Never done anything but freshwater but have read proper care for the puffer.

Puffers will sometimes bother or nip at coral.
Macro algae is easier to obtain and keep alive compared to some of the sw plants that are available.
If you keep the brackish water somewhat stable you should be able to keep some fauna in there.

Most of the plants in the bayou(s) and drainage ditches south of Houston can be considered brackish.
'Dear Lord,' the minister began, with arms extended toward heaven and a rapturous look on his upturned face. 'Without you, we are but dust ...'
He would have continued but at that moment my very obedient daughter who was listening leaned over to me and asked quite audibly in her shrill little four-year old girl voice, 'Mom, what is butt dust?'

They need around 1.010 sg in the water. Here is a link on brackish plants: http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?showtopic=143235
Fish are people too, they just have gills.

Nice article fishboy.  I hope to get a pea puffer tank going some day.  I still have three projects ahead of that one though :)

The good thing about pea puffers is that they are freshwater.

Cool Ek, so like does the macro algae have the same benefits as the plants?  I don't know what fauna is.  Right now the tank is setup FW planted.  There is some dwarf crawfish and a 2 mystery snails but I might take them out once I start adding salt.  I figure they will die in the salt and the plants, we will see.  I have some extra red crypts (I can't spell the scientific name).  I read them under a wegpage that they could be considered brackish.  I bought a little bamboo plastic thingy but after a while I get bored with plastic and always end up going for a more natural look.  The substrate is mixed rock and ADA soil.  Great for growing FW plants. Maybe change the substrate?

That seems like hardly any salt at all.  The hydrometer I bought starts at 1.012.  How much salt is that?  A teaspoon for a 10 gal?

Hydrometers are not really accurate... sometimes the temps will affect their reading.

I have some macro algae that I am pulling out of my tank if you want to give them a try.
