  • Want to redo 30 gallon - need ideas

I have a 30 gallon tall dimentions 24"long*12"wide*24high, so the footprint is small 12*24

its a semi planted now (3 large anubias nana, some small crypt, jave fern etc.) current residents - a kribensis pair, a small pleco, 3 platys and i've not been really giving the tank the care it deserves

i want to completely re-do the tank, whatever setup i do, i want to keep the three large anubias and anything else can go

i want to do a species only (would prefer some sort of cichlid or something interesting) and i want something that would breed and maybe a few surviving fry's can grow and join the "colony"

i have also thought of maybe keeping one specimen of some beautiful large fish, but i can't think of any that would be good for the size, i have also thought of maybe keeping a trio of discus since the aquarium is tall and they would still have 10gal/per fish

    maybe some sort of rainbowfish?

maybe some sort of small cichlid that i can start with a pair or few and grow to a size of maybe 10 fish???

maybe an interesting rasbora or small shoaling fish that will multiply, but whatever i get, i want to make sure they take advantage of the full water column instead of just the footprint since most of the volume is in the height

    please provide suggestions

i used to have 4 angels in there before, they were fine as juviis, but adult angels are very tall and more than a pair will be too much, i do have a show quality koi angel breeding pair in my ada 120p, but they are the main act in that tank, maybe i can give them an exclusive home!

apistos or another dwarf is something i have thought about, but if they have babies, they are not going to really be able to live with them once adults since the space(footprint) is limited, the other consideration is they will mostly hang out at the bottom around the anubias and the tank will just look empty, decisions decisions

jeb, that is very nice, is that the 140 or 56 gallon? i am afraid my 30 gallon might be smaller than what discus needs

puffers are cool and good personality, but most of the time they usually just sit and do nothing, its not my cup of tea per say

Appistos hang out all over the tank, not just the bottom. Although, just a single pair seems a bit limited....

How about two pairs of different appistos (Double Red and Rainbow).

Another idea would be to put around 30-40 tiny tetras, like neons, chili red rasboras or emerald rasboras (which are actually red and blue). When you put that many together they'll school around and it's so beautiful....

I just ordered these for my 45 (12x36xtall)
                        Crypt Spiralis
                        A. longiplumosa
                        E. ozelot potted
                        E. Rubin Red
                        Dwarf baby Tears

If you want something different, try a few small sunfish.
'Dear Lord,' the minister began, with arms extended toward heaven and a rapturous look on his upturned face. 'Without you, we are but dust ...'
He would have continued but at that moment my very obedient daughter who was listening leaned over to me and asked quite audibly in her shrill little four-year old girl voice, 'Mom, what is butt dust?'
