  • Got a problem with my severums

My wife decided she wanted to get a couple of red severums yesterday so we went to Fish Gallery and found about ten of them for $60 each. I asked him why so expensive and he told me some crap about "seasonal fish". Anyway, he ended up selling me 6 of them for $120, which i thought was a steal.
So, my wife went to go pick out the ones she wanted and i ventured off toward the plecos. The entire time, i never looked at the severums to check for disease, deformities, etc. It was Fish Gallery, i assumed things were on the up and up. So i get the fish home and realize that first, all of their fins are torn to shreds, one of them has something growing out of his eye, and then, they all have this slight indention in their foreheads. it looks like someone poked em in the head with a pencil.
Have you ever heard of this?
Should i take em back to Fish Gallery?
They are in a holding tank right now b/c i didnt know if what they had was contagious.

Sounds like hole in the head...that indicates they were not keep in good quality water somewhere along the line....and/or they have been on a very crappy diet...call them up and ask what they are willing to do for you...???

        Severum is a seasonal fish?

        Anyways, pics would help.

It doesn't matter where you buy fish from, its on you if you bought some fish and didn't check them out for obvious problems. That said, I would call Fish Gallery and explain what the deal is. Ask for Danny if he is there. They are not obligated to do anything, but they might.

I don't know any fish store that doesn't have some sort of issue with fish or tanks.

I don't think they will take the fish back. There is somthing on the reciept that says not returns on live stock. This sucks man. You would think for the amount of money they ask for their fish the would be of better quality. This sounds like a fish store further north. Good luck.

Before everyone jumps on the HITH (Hole in the Head) bandwagon, are you certain that they aren't just the normal sensory pits on the fish... that is where they at located. HITH occurs when those sensory pits erode away.

If it turns out to be Hole in the Head disease, I recommend upping the temp to about 86-88 and then add Jungle HITH to the water. Now like Tim said, please make sure that the holes look like they are eroding away like as if something is eating away at the sensory organs. If the holes are nice and neat then its just normal. Keep them in QT for at least 14 days, add melafix right now to promote healing of the fins and any other damage the fish might have taken.

not real sure, but 3 of the 6 have died. we have them in a medicine tank and are currently dosing with melafix.

Any idea what is wrong? No physical signs? Do you have a camera so that you can take pics? I hope the other three make it.
