  • Cross Contamination

Just wanted to show by example how easy it is to cross contaminate your tanks.

My 55+ planted Tetra tank was getting overgrown with java moss.
No big deal, I took the top off and grabbed big handfuls of java moss untill there were no more clumps big enough to grab.

So I tossed all the Java moss in a 40g tank that was bare because I had just torn it down and filled it with water and a filter to cycle.

When ever I set up a spawn tank, I grab some java moss from here or there so that the females have a place to hide.

As the baby bettas got bigger I noticed I had Hydra in 5 of my fry tanks, but didn't know where it came from. At that time the baby bettas were 4 to 8 weeks old. I treated all the tanks and killed the Hydra and at that time all the baby bettas were fine.

two weeks later all the youngest betta fry were missing and I had a half dozen strange looking fry in the tank. I had no idea what they were or how they had got there but I figure they ate my baby betta fry.

Today as I was adding water to the tank amd removing the java moss, I regognized the fry. I have 5 austrailian ranbow juvies about 1" long crusing the tank and one baby betta about 1/2" long hiding under the sponge filter.

Can you guess where they came from ???
'Dear Lord,' the minister began, with arms extended toward heaven and a rapturous look on his upturned face. 'Without you, we are but dust ...'
He would have continued but at that moment my very obedient daughter who was listening leaned over to me and asked quite audibly in her shrill little four-year old girl voice, 'Mom, what is butt dust?'

Not cross contamination... more like lack of qt or man's ability to introduce what is not wanted.
