i think i know why they hide, do they like current? or just steady water. i place them some Zuchinni and the thing floats. it took them about 5 hrs to sink.

they dont seem to like strong current. i ended up going to a smaller canister filter for that reason. my white pearls are out and active at all hours but they also have plants and good cover from driftwood. i just hung a 2x18w t5ho fixture on top and that didnt bother them so lighting isnt an issue. mine did hide for the first week in the tank. i would imagine some overhead cover might help, i have foxtail floating at the surface. i also would be surprised that berried females are going to be shy. i wonder if inverts recognize dither fish? i do have a school of microrasboras in with them. blanch the zukes in boiling water for 15-20 sec to soften them up and they will sink better, i also use a suction cup mounted food clip.

well the light on this tank sucks, even my girl was like i like the light but you cant see anything inside. and the minifilter its just to powerfull. it makes the water agitate to much and when i do see the shrimp cruze te tank and they pass by the curent they run to hide again. i did blanch them for a whole minute but they floated. in the morning they were on the bottom hopefully they are eating them.

i sponge filter will be big for the tank what else can i use?

im not sure about a filter for a 3.5 gallon, i went with the smaller zoo med nano501 for the 10 gallon i have but that may be pretty strong for yours. what kind of filter does it have now?

yeh you dont want too much current for the shrimps.

i use a finnex pf5 on my small tank...its pretty decent for like $15 buck shipped from amazon. supposedly the red sea filter works good too.

a power filter is probably the best thing to use for this application even though i dont care for them generally. finnex seems to be a good product and the pf5 is rated 10gph less than your filter but will that be enough to matter? its hard to say without trying one. personally, i havent bought any equipment from red sea that has been worth owning in a long time. maybe you can somehow diffuse the output where it dumps back into the aquarium with floating plants or maybe even a small piece of clear plastic that sits just under the surface of the water

yep and who knows what the filters are really putting out?

i just put a rock right where the output of the water is coming out and it kind of diffuses it. its works for me!

it came with one but it drops the water like a cascade and the plants yell for help so i removed it and not the water yets to the front wall but still everything is moving. i was thnking on just placing a bubbler and let it be. but then the bottom will be fitly.

can you cut the cover? usually some covers have that black plastic molding towards the back in which you can cut it to fit the HOB filters.

unless your cover is all glass

cover is plastic but it has the opening for the existing filter and in the middle goes the light and then opening for a heater. the tank size is about 12in length 18in tall and about 10in wide its a 180 view so its really hard. i had it afor about 3 weeks i wonder if i can jsut return it.

i doubt that you could return it unless it is defective. madehtsobis idea of a rock under the return sounds good too.

yeh you got like no more "play room" to work with.

just swap filters and put a rock under the return and it should be better and put a bunch of filter floss in the filter to sorta slow down the output...some HOB back filters you can adjust the flow rate as well.. i can adjust the flow on my finnex.

i wonder if it is safe to put a filter on a dimmer switch so that you can adjust flow? i would think that you could do this since you can do it with computer type brushless fans.
