u have to "train" stubborn fishes to eat frozen, non live foods.

i had about 6-8 temensis, mono peacock bass before. people had the hardest time feeding them pellets, frozen shrimp. but mine ate them just fine!

you have to like literally starve them for a few days and then literally throw in a piece of thawed shrimp to get them interested and once they go after it. your set.

but it takes some time. and you also mix in some live with thawed food and see what happens.

Ya I tried that with my 6" peacock bass....a couple days layer he managed to fit a 4.5" tank mate mostly in his mouth!

But Ive starved these puffers to the point I thought they'd be dead, still won't touch non-live foods. So I figured raising self cloning crayfish would be a cost effective way to keep them fed!

If anybody is interested, once they start multiplying I'm sure I'll have more than I need.

I think puffers or the like are the most stubborn when it comes to accepting prepared staple.

I had puffers and triggers before in my surgetank and they would be stupid picky and would rather die than eat dry foods.

I picked up about a dozen ghost shrimp on my way home this evening, sat the bag in the tank and we took the dogs out to potty/a short walk, came back up 15 min later and the fugu had torn into the bag and there isn't a ghost shrimp one in sight.

When I was relocating him to his temporary tank a few months ago, he actually bit me and drew blood.

This puffer really has been a pain. And to think that I'm going to have to set up a brackish tank for it when it matures, it lives ridiculously long, and gets to 29" (or so I've read, thankfully they grow slow) it's just a hassle for 1 fish! Haha and then she brought home the figure 8 puffer!!!!

Ok, rant over. Expecting my crayfish tomorrow I think.

Update: All 10 arrived healthy and happy. I was told they were in the 1-1.5" range, but it's more like .5-.75" range. Oh well, they are housed in their own 20 gal long at the moment, which will double as a nyrerei growout tank when I get some fry if I haven't moved by then (once moved they will get their own grow out tank and not have to share!)

My question-any idea of a good, peaceful bottom feeder to help keep the tank clean that will leave the crays alone? They are so tiny I don't know what to put with them.

They're just so small. Lots of tank to cover. But I guess it isn't really necessary.

Once mine grow large enough and start reproducing I'll prob start selling juvies for a good price, but mine prob have a good 2 months or more before they reach the proper size.
