So after about a month of reading up on here and the planted tank, checking out awesome planted scapes, and falling a little bit in love with shrimp, i decided to bite the bullet and set up a tank. i picked out the Fluval Ebi, for its footprint, design, and seemingly-all-in-one-package deal. the tank's been running a few weeks now, and my plants are doing pretty well. the fauna have survived over a week, and i am going to do a water change here in the next few hours.
FLORA:
- anubia barteri that i have tied to my driftwood
- christmas moss on the driftwood
- spiral val
- java fern (lace and normal narrow leaf)
- some random crypt that looks like a mini sword
CURRENT FAUNA:
2 RCS (0.2 berried) - to test if my water was good enough for shrimp after some cycling
2 red honey dwarf gourami (1.1) - i had read that these might snack on shrimp, but a guy at Fish Gallery disagreed... when i eventually do get a larger bunch of shrimp, i'm going to move these to a planted bowl i have already set up
1 gold mystery snail
so far, everyone seems ok. the female shrimp didn't lose their berried eggs when i put them in the tank, and the fish seem to be doing just fine. i never see any of them eat the food, but i guess they are fine. i don't put in very much....but i worry :) i'm used to reptiles, amphibians, and tarantulas - who mostly go after food as soon as it enters their habitats.
PICS:
i really liked my inital scape...but totally had an idiot moment - forgot the wood would float and spent over an hour wrapping it with christmas moss, java fern, and an anubia before ever water-logging it or boiling it.

current scape has two rocks included - one to weigh down the driftwood to help it get waterlogged and one that the wood is tied to, again to help it sink down. so there will be some changes to the scape once the wood is no longer buoyant. also - i can't remember the name of the long, wrinkled plant in the very back or the small almost mini-sword-like plant in the front by the lace java.

QUESTIONS:
- i feel like the spray bar on this filter is pretty strong, is that a problem for CRS, RCS or other shrimp?
- how do i convert the filter that came with the Ebi (small Fluval one) to include a sponge piece so (eventually) shrimplets don't get sucked in? (do i just trim a small piece of sponge to place in that first part of the canister?)
- perhaps most importantly: WHAT KIND OF SHRIMP SHOULD I GET?!? i can't decide! right now...i'm thinking S+ CRS and tigers/super tigers....but i've also toyed with the idea of rilis or painted fires. so far my water parameters seem like they would support any of those, and none of those are super duper expensive.
- i most likely will remove the gouramis when i add my shrimp, but what are yall's thoughts? the gouramis are pretty active and super attractive. i thought i might let my shrimp colony grow out a bit ,then add the gouramis back and/or chili rasboras or galaxy rasboras/CPDs. advice / experience with Ebis welcome!
thanks, all!
