  • LFS and Shrimps

I'm starting to notice a recent trend in LPS and LFS. My LPS, not all that great, except for convenient supplies, don't carry a large variety of aquatic animals, just the easy for beginners kind. The LFS a couple of miles away carry the same stuff, just more aquatic animals that are easy to care for. Point is, I recently started to notice that they're starting to carry the Bee shrimps and other shrimps. Normally they don't carry them because they don't know of their existence. I asked the owner of the LPS why did she get them, who, and how much. She thought they might sell of course, the seller was from Canada, she didn't tell me how much she bought them but the store listed price was 7 bucks per CRS that varied in grades. The tanks the CRS defied normal keeping, gravel and a slab of rock. She got mad when I told her what I knew about shrimps and told me to she doesn't want to hear that type of talk in her store. Not advertising but the store is Pets Place on Scarsdale.

Anyone notice that local stores are starting to carry more and more stuff like this and have little to no information on exotic animals?

Pets stores buy them cheaply then they don't care about loosing a few. They will buy/sell what they think the customer wants. Look at petco and petsmart bringing in more and more species they never carried before. If enough people ask for exotic species they'll look into obtaining them. Its sad for the animals, but they're trying to make $$$.

Indeed, I was truly amazed when I got into shrimp keeping just how misinformed many stores were on their care. I suppose I have just given up and know not to ask now. I even ignore incorrectly labeled shrimp and would not even begin to consider asking the personel there what species it is. There are a few exceptions, FG and FR2 are both well informed. You can tell by their care of the shrimp and housing them properly.

I find it sad that major stores adamantly avoid smaller species that would do well in their tiny tanks they sell and wonder why folks give up on the hobby. As a newcomer its very difficult to find a mix that might work permanantly in a 10 gallon tank and be enjoyable.
