  • Bamboo Shrimp and Livebearers

I have two bamboo shrimp in my 60 gal tank but they aren't really filter feeding so I'm thinking about moving them to my ten gal with mollies platies and swords will this cause any issues, and what can I use to get the water moving faster also will the faster moving water cause issues with the fish. thanks

I don't know about the shrimp, but I can answer your last question. I have mollies & platies in a double filtered 50g tank & they play in the flow from both the HOB & the canister. I don't see an issue with the flow required for the shrimp bothering the fish.

How long has the tank been setup? BamBoo Shrimp feed on the mico algae. If the tank has not been running long enough there will be no mico algae. You can use a powerhead to move the water. setup a branch or a rock with the powerhead blowing across it. the shrimp will find that spot. if the tank is not established use first bites fry food for them. they can filter it out of the water or sweep it off the bottom.
      Good luck

Use a powerhead like a koralia (the 240 is more than enough for freshwater). I would leave them in the 60 and try the powerhead first. I had mine in a 75 and they always would sit next to the powerhead.

+1, this is exactly how mine are set up. get flow moving across a branch or heavy plants with a powerhead. it doesnt need to be a tornado in there put they do actively seek out these areas. dried daphnia might be another thing to try along with fry food.

I know they turn a reddish or oranrish color befor they molt. It may have gone in to shock. If it couldn't find a safe place to do it...

i bought five and one was orange when i brought them home. he didnt live so i dont think they handle stress around that time well. i replanted the aquarium they are in last week and it must have kicked up some debris. all the bamboo shrimp stopped filter feeding and went around picking at the substrate. its pretty funny, they look like infielders trying to palm groundballs with catchers mitts but they get it done.

when they pick around the substrate, they are starving. it's like a last resort for them when they can't find food. i just crush flakes in the outflow from my filter and mine line up to catch the food with their cute little fan hands... troy suggested hikari first bites, and they really like that too...

in my case, they are not starving...they have chosen to go after a more plentiful food source since i disturbed many plant roots. they tank has been running for 10+ years and they are thriving in it. i probably wouldnt hurt to purposefully sprinkle some daphnia in the outflow on occasion though

ah, i see! that might certainly also be the case, lol. i guess once they figure out that food comes from a spot, they will just camp out and wait for it...

the ones I have, that are allys. molt about ones a month. In the video I have posted here. the shrimp set on a branch, that has a powerhead blowing across it. they never come off of the branch. But to molt. So I would say yes they camp out ones they know where the food is coming from...
