    Starting a shrimp nano

Been thinking of trying some DIY co2 in this tank prior to adding stock to get the plants growing thick. Has anyone here used the 2 liter bottle method?

I have and it is a damn pain in the ***. You get leaks, spills, bubble count is weird, and it just looks out of place. Suggest going to the paintball co2 route if you're staying on low budget. You could pick up those little co2 bottles for aquariums at petco or fish gallery, but they're going to cost a little more for refills and the set.

And for OEBT, it's going to take a while for them to breed for the people that just got them. I got plenty of Sakura's and Fire Reds right now if you need them.

Alpha pro has been doing 10 for 100 so I may buy some from them or I'll order 15 from Speedie in a couple of weeks.

I need to get a new light for this tank as the one currently on it is my desk light and I need it back for school. I would like to get a clip on light that is capable of growing the HC that I have in the tank. Any suggestions?

              Re: Starting a shrimp nano

I like the fluval 13watt light that comes with the ebi/flora kit. You can even have two if you have enough room. Some LFS carry these in stock.

Do you happen to know which ones carry them? I looked at them online last night but was sure how good they were. I was also looking at the fluval co2 system for nanos that uses the little cartridges or I found a paintball co2 setup on planted tank. This will be my first high tech tank and so I may just keep some Sakura reds in the tank rather than OEBTs for a few months to get the hang of co2 before putting $200 worth of shrimp in a tank.

Try fish gallery for local. I've seen them there in the past.

If you don't mind online ordering, there's plenty of venues.

Pass on the fluval CO2, and get a paintball unit. It'll be cheaper on gas in the long run.

                    Starting a shrimp nano

I really have no clue what good and what's not when it comes to co2. This is the link to the setup I was looking at and was thinking the ultimate option. http://www.plantedtank.net/forums/sh...d.php?t=190882
If someone that knows about them can tell me if its a good deal or not worth it that would be great.

                      Re: Starting a shrimp nano

That seems fair, especially with $5 off. Why not just DIY one, it'll be much more satisfying.

I have no clue how. If someone can help me pick out the parts and show me how it goes together then I'm more than willing to DIY it.

I noticed there's no solenoid on that setup, if you care about automating CO2 on/off with a timer...

It is quite easy to build. I built one myself, ebay has the asa valve with a solenoid for 15 bucks. You can buy parts to fit the air tubing at home depot for an easy 7 bucks. Only problem I have with it is fine tuning it, unless you get a swage valve it won't be easy to get it at the perfect bps.

So I was reading on Planted Tank that some people are using sponge filters and smaller aqua clear filters with purigen instead of carbon to help with water parameters in their shrimp nanos. Has anyone tried this or think it would be a good idea?

You could use a zoomed 501 with purigen filter media and a sponge filter attached. By the way, I found the glass lid for the nano. You can have it if you want it, I have bracket mounts for it too.
