  • The main tips I got was to either use CO2, dose Excel, or pack the tank with a lot of plants.

    • Dosing regular flourish weekly and trying to grow out an HC carpet. I have some Java Moss, Java Fern, a baby Bronze Crypt, Corkscrew Val, and a Moss Ball in addition to the HC. I don't want to add a whole lot else but may have to look at doing the moss wall that I want for the back sooner than planned.

        • Nerites. Nerite snails are the best at algae control. I have just one guy in the same size tank and he kept it algae free. Ask Tim, he has hundreds. I might get some more for the new tank I got.

          • My nerites (2) keep algae off the tank walls, but not off of the plants. Mine like to eat plants too, but it's fine because there's only two and they don't eat much of the plants. There's certain types of fish/snail/shrimp that will eat certain types of algae. O-cats, nerite snails, and amano shrimp are a great algae clean up crew for smaller tanks. If you have larger tanks, you can include SAE. I'm sure there's plenty of other livestock that could handle the problem.

I think Flourish and Excel are two different things but same brand (Seachem)? I plan to dose both until I get a CO2 system on my nano, and then, I'll stop dosing Excel.

            • Nerites and Amanos, two of the best team mates. Though Amanos are greedy as hell when it comes to feeding the shrimps.

                • olive nerites are the best algae eaters of all the nerites for some reason. i have them clean up mainly glass but also wood and broad leafed plants. stuffing the aquarium until it fully matures is always a good idea, most of the plants that you have now are not fast growers though. maybe try a few stem plants like hygrophila, rotala, or luwigia. of course testing for excess pollutants will let you know where you are at. weekly water changes with low TDS water will help too.

seachems glutaraldehyde product is called seachem flourish excel, the base fertilizer is called just flourish.

young SAES are great for black beard algae but they quickly get used to eating prepared foods and then get fat and lazy. they also love fine leaves plants as i found out when they wiped out my pogostemon stellatus, hygrophila pinnatifida, and rotala wallachii. on a side note, turtles relish SAES quite a bit

                  • Moved 2 Olive Nerites earlier and already have about 10% of the algae in the tank gone.

                    • That's good. My zebra nerites keep my tank algae-free. They clean the plants and everything. I don't remember the last time I used my algae magnet, but I can tell you it's been well over a month. I have way too much light for my tank and I run the lights for 12 hours a day.
I went off the deep end

So I went out and bought a small 15 watt heater for this tank nuts its not adjustable so if I leave it plugged in the temp stays around 85-86 but if I unplug it, it drops to around 73 at night. I'm planning on getting a timer for it after pay day but which is my better option til then?

Return it and find a heater that keeps the temp around what you want. My 15watt keeps the temp at 76F

Redid the scape because the java moss was blocking a lot of the view. ImageUploadedByTapatalk1355250381.505281.jpgImageUploadedByTapatalk1355250401.728148.jpg

Also removed everything from the ac20 except the purigen.

I would keep the sponge and biomax and sit the purigen on top
