  • crystal red or crystal black in a 6 gal.bookshelf tank from petco?

I saw this the other day and was wondering if it make a good shrimp tank. if anything change the filter to a fluval nano canister and maybe change the lighting or would the smallness of the tank be a lil harder to keep water parameters good? link down below to what it looks like

I have a small 6 gallon tank with breeding Crystal Blacks (High grade, acquired from Heipsta) and can offer some suggestions that have worked for me. I used Brightwell as a substrate and saw only a slight ammonia spike, but was very effective at lowering the Ph. It is currently under a 6.0 (my test only goes that low). They do best in a lower Ph, low TDS water especially for breeding. I only use Distilled water (100%) and have never used any stones in the tank. There was quite a bit of debate over using even Seiryu stone in breeding CRS/CBS tanks, so I avoided it entirely. I planted well, but even now I am wishing I had more moss in it. I added some Chili rasbora and they have done fabulously and have not seen any predation of the shrimplets. They are breeding in the tank and all the females are fully berried.

sweet i might do this then. I need something that I can put on the bar and the size the tank is would do wonders. I have a few pieces of small drift I could use that could help with the PH as well. Which Brighwell did you use? I'll probably heavily plant it with some nice mosses and a few stim plants. think the stock light be alright?

We used the Rio Escuro F (black, fine grade) and they have 3 grades to choose from. It is a bit light for substrate, so any high flow will move it around a bit. That sounds like a great idea on stocking and if the stock light is a bit low, try using crypts, they don't mind a little darker tank. What is the stock light for it? Maybe swapping the bulb to a 6500K could help if its a bit low or you could always build a small canopy, paint it black and add a small incandescent fixture for a CFL bulb... Cutting a plexiglass top and finding a nice desk lamp would give you more options as well...
