Indeed, we actually had a lengthy discussion at the last dart frog meeting about assassins. Upon comparing notes we realized that there are quite a few differences amongst just our own tanks that seems to manifest strange or incompatible data concerning their behavior. As the only freshwater member of the whelk family, I am not entirely certain familial diagnoses will help as I assume they diverge quite some time ago. I will say that in observing them they do act like some whelks I have seen in footage, but I have yet to see and defense mechanism in my handling over the years. Mine certainly do predate on each other though, as I will have a bloom (50-100) tiny offspring and in a matter of a week only 3-5 survive the initial parental cannabilism. More food in the tank will yield higher ratios and I assume larger tanks can support larger colonies.

I've also heard that the presence of an operculum may defer them, as I've seen that they do not eat my apples... but I've only kept them with large adults, not babies.my fish house:

On the subject of babies, I just realized that my Assassins had babies. Starting to notice the babies emerging from the sand substrate. They don't seem to like climbing the glass in pursuit of my mystery snails, but rather forage on the bottom were they eat all my puffer's stock of garbage snails.

sweet! mine are breeding also. side note- poison is toxic if ingested but harmless if injected. venom is toxic if injected but harmless if ingested... so this would be a venom question. :)my fish house:
