  • High Grade CRS Tank

I spent my money bag on a bunch of High grade Crystal Red Shrimp (mostly A's with a few S+'s) so that left me with a pretty small budget for a tank. Luckily I had enough pieces lying around the place try and put one together. I grabbed the filter from a 10g tank, driftwood from my turtle tank and the more interesting stones from my pond edging. No need for a stand, I just put it next to my mixed species 20g long on the kitchen bar and they fill the space quite nicely, and you get to view the tank from both sides. All I had to buy really were the new 20g Long tank, black substrate, shop light and plants. And a hair curler. Tried to let it cycle for a couple days, but I figured the filter was already seeded so weeks wouldn't necessary. Sorry for the crappy pics. Turns out the camera that served me so well on many a drunken karaoke nights does nothing for shrimp tanks.

Next tank over, a fire-bellied toad, fire-bellied newt and painted turtle decided to pose:

Thanks! 20 CRS and the seller was nice enough to throw in 2 black bee's. I wouldn't mind throwing some amanos in but I'm looking around the net to see if this would cause any problems (interbreeding, predation, gangland turf battles etc.)

The best thing to keep with CRS is More CRS....Amanos will overrun the CRS and bully the food.

The CRS like soft water and I had mine with Aquasoil Substrate and they were really happy.

Thanks for the info ek. I heard about the soft water thing and I think we're notorious for having really hard water. Good for koi though(brings out the darker colors). Aquasoil will have to be next on my shopping list.

Well it might be troublesome to get aquasoil now that you already have the CRS unless you have another tank for them...what you can do it get some peat to run in the filters.

I don't mind dismantling the setup since I got pics to put it back together. Since I stole the filter from a 10g tank, that has a vacancy. I like the peat in the filter idea... I used to keep some for pond applications.

This is so cool. I think it will be much nicer if you have more plants in the CRS tank. How many turtles you got in the 20gal?

                  Re: High Grade CRS Tank

Yeah I actually had more plants than took them out because I wanted to see them walk around the dark substrate more. Plus I wanted to leave room to hunt down some harder to find plants that I wanted. But I know what you're saying. I expect the tank will look a lot different in a couple months.

In the other tank I got a painted, map and cooter. I was actually interested in your musk, Thomas, but funds are low and man you live way out there!

I can see you have a great love with tutles. The pond will be ready when they grow up, right? Let me tell you this, since you are a serious turtle raiser, if you get a chance to come close, I will have a special price for you.

I still love turtles, but sadly if I decide to keep them, I can't guarantee a better home for them once they grow big (even my species don't grow that huge). Parents will not fund me for the pond for sure.

What I liked in a shrimp species only tank was a bit a driftwood and some nice moss tied to it.....plenty for them to graze on, keeps the tank from looking like an eye sore and leaves plenty of room to see the shrimp.

But, the tank looks awesome!  8)  If you don't mind me asking, from where did you end up getting the shrimp? APC, or somewhere else? Keep us updated if you decide to change it up a bit with the Aquasoil.

I used it as a pre-filter to keep the shrimp from getting sucked into the filter intake. There was a whole spiel about it in another thread.

I got the shrimp from kangshiang (suggested by ek) on the planetinverts forum. Pretty cool guy. If you decide to order from him tell him PlanB sent you! (not that that would amount to anything)

I bought about 100 from him and he gave me an exceptional deal!
