  • MTS invasion!

I was contacted by a lady on FB about her angel being attacked by her other angels & about a snail problem she had. Rest assured, she wasn't exaggerating. She sent me a picture of one corner of her tank & it was pretty bad. It's a 75g tank with 1 HOB. Her substrate looked like someone baked a trumpet snail layer cake but it was supposed to be black & blue gravel.

Admittedly she hasn't changed the filters, done a water change, tested parameters, nor vacuumed since the tank was set up about a year ago. All she's done is feed them & add water. As limited as my experience is with MTS (none) and angels, I decided that the very least I can do for this lady is suggest she move the angel to another tank, tell her how to set snail traps & suggest she get some assassin snails. I told her I have puffers that will eat the snails, so she offered to give me some. My plan was to call Troy once I got there to help her with the angels.

Well, upon my arrival, this is what I found.

She pulled the angel yesterday & put it in a cat litter bucket. It couldn't stay there & was ramming itself into the sides repeatedly, so I took it home with me.

Needless to say, I talked her into pulling all the substrate, washing EVERYTHING out completely & starting over. She's all for it and is even gonna throw the HOB away. I'm going to go back over tomorrow, pick up the substrate and get as many snails out at possible for puffer food. I took some with me today & stopped by Troy's on my way home. I wanted to give him some of the MTS & have him take a look at the beaten angel. She's gonna be fine, he assures me so that's definitely a positive. :)

Troy told me to post this up to share with yall. Have yall ever seen an infestation this bad? I read that overfeeding causes the population explosion. There's a CRAZY amount of them!

Set the hob into a strong vinegar solution or bleach and it will kill off any snails/ eggs. Leave submerged for a while. Rinse thorough and it will be fine. New media if course. Really not fond of mts.

She just wants to toss it. I told her what to do to keep it, but she wants to make sure there's not one snail anywhere near her tank again. She doesn't have anything in there that would be affected by Coppersafe, so I'll tell her about that tomorrow. Poor lady can't enjoy her fish for the snails. The entire substrate is constantly on the move!

MTS are good puffer food. Mine have already torn through what I brought home today. Keeping them in a bucket, all by themselves.

        Re: MTS invasion!

Copper safe is touch and go sometimes when it comes to MTS. I got some CuSO4.5H2O crystals and made my own copper sulfate solution and treated all my tanks for a couple of months to fix an MTS problem I had.

Only downside in this situation would be the sheer mass of rotting snails that will turn the water very foul in no time.

Another solution is to set snail traps in the tank overnight and harvest them in the morning. YouTube has dine cool ideas for snail traps

I'll suggest she get some assassin snails even after she cleans everything. From what I understand, they can be boogers to get rid of. If she ditches the substrate alltogether, cleans the tank, replaces the filter & washes/soaks everything in a vinegar/bleach solution that should rid her of most of them & the assassin snails can claim the stragglers, correct?

I set up 2 snail traps while I was there with broccoli. I had her do it last night but she used apple & was pretty unsuccessful. Hopefully tomorrow I'll have some better results. Nevertheless, I'm helping her pull her substrate tomorrow so the majority of them are coming out then!

Algae wafers, sinking fish food also works great for snail traps.

                    Re: MTS invasion!

My first tank was loaded with mts.... The substrate was literally mts Lmao. They were everywhere! Even after I cleaned the substrate with boiling hot water and manually sifted out the substrate to separate the snails, they still managed to reappear on the tank. They're a PITA! Bleach gets them good and then you don't have to worry about harming fish without scales or snails that you want. Just make sure to use dechlorinator afterwards.

I considered the algae wafers, Sunny, but she didn't have any because her cats ate them.
