  • Shrimp Colony Woes

I had just managed to save my CBS, CRS, and OEBT colony from dying out completely and now they're in the process of repopulation (thanks to Azoo Max Breed special diet). I'm leaving for Asia in less than a week for a month. Now the worry of whether they will survive under my twin brother's care kicks in. I don't want to come back to find the tank infested with hair algae and no inverts alive.

So I set temperature controls to stay at 74F.
Light time set for 4 hours in the morning and evening.
    Did plant trimmings.
    Removed CO2
    Cut back on chemical use
    Cut back on useless aquariums
And emergency power shut off via wifi in case of an emergency

I'm trying to not let the summer incident occur again where all my colonies were completely wiped out.

I know that you don't know me at all, but I'd be glad to check in on them once a week or so, with your brother there, of course. Let me know.

Or- hook him up with this forum and have him send me a PM if things look grim in the tank.

Pay some one to take care of your tanks. If you come home to DOA's don't Pay. It's only money...

I'd offer to help, but your quite a distance away...lol. Maybe increase light ime a bit to offer the shrimp a bit of algae in case someone 'forgets' to feed them regularly... Either way good luck and hopefully it goes better this time. Otherwise we can always do another Speedie shrimp buy, lol. We'll be having some CBS soon as our colony has decided to take off

Every summer. The wife and I get away for a week and every year we come home to DOA's. Your brother your freinds or kids (in my case ) are just doing a faver.... If you get some one and pay for it. Its their Job. Who will do it best? Who knows how to take care of a tank or tanks the best? if I had the money I would get a pro....

Even with pros, there's always that chance that there will be some DOAs especially if they do water changes since their water chemistry would be different from the owner's unless they're from the same area.

If your system is balanced right you shouldn't be having a problem at all.
I left breeding tanks with no care for more than six months.
Only thing I did was refill with RO/DI water once in the three weeks and that's it.
Of course they stopped breeding, but never had a loss of shrimp.
Now after that period when I kicked in the care again I had a berried shrimp within 3 weeks and over a period in the next 4 months following hunderds of baby shrimp.
Sometimes a down period is a good thing to do for your shrimp.

Just got back. A couple of OEBTs survived, Red Rilis stopped breeding, Blue Rilis vanished, CRS is questionable, Yellows are fine, Sakura's and Fire Reds seems normal, Amanos normal, and Snowballs are just annoying as ever. Lets hope I can bring the population back up in the next 5 months before I leave again.
