  • Snail "care"

So I recently bought some plants and they came with a few freeloaders. I have four (that I've seen at once) very small snails and I love that they are eating up the algae in my tank. Are they like hermit crabs and need replacement shells? Do I need to worry about them at all?

No worries at all, other then if they get too populated. They can eat some softer plants if food sources run thin. If it does become an issue some assassin snails can eat them all. Nerites are great at algae control and breed in brackish, so no chance of accidental offspring...

Right now you are happy to have something new. but three months down the road. those 4 little snails are going to turn in to 4,000 snails.
they make great food for puffer fish.

I'll have to either get my hands on pea puffers or find someone to give them to. Thanks for the help!

They are not all that bad really, just can be a bit destructive if left to their own devices. they should breed readily and watch their numbers, if you realize they are getting a bit out of hand then throw up a message on here and there are a lot of locals who have assassin snails who can get you set up to deal with them. Assassins just don't eat algae or plants, but are very effective at killing any pest snail you have. They breed much more slowly and when the snails run out have a tendency to cannabalize their own kind, so will act as their own population control. They are fairly nice bumblebee colored shells and are easy to give away or sell if they get too populated
