look at the claws. females have more roundy between claws and joint. Males are longer, not so roundy. males have 2 little sperm transfer thingies where tail/body meet, females lack these. They look like thicker swimmerets but point toward the body. They are opportunists. They will try to eat what they can catch, even if it's their own young, a sibling or even their own mother! They know when each other moult, and they know the moulter is vulnerable and will go for it. anyone that go fishing knows that soft-shell crays usually make good bait. They're a favorite food for bullfrogs too (i give my bulls crickets tho!).

The smart fishies will learn. Give them plants, they will learn to sleep on them. This won't guarantee safety, but it betters the odds.
