  • Rough molt....

Earlier today I noticed that Blindie, my 6" Cherax Quadricarinatus Crayfish had been fairly inactive much of the day, and had stayed in the same corner all afternoon.
A while ago, Warren (b/f) was tank-watching and asked what was wrong with him, he was having a very difficult time just walking along the substrate - half a 48" tank away from his daytime corner.  So I take a look, notice his color was very off, and I look in his corner to find an empty replica of him.

So Ah-Hah!   Mystery solved.  His difficulty walking was due to his size and the fact he's walking with a body that's as soft as warm butter - and i'm not exaggerating here.  I move to the other end of the tank to look at him head-on and notice that he's only got one claw  :(.  A ways behind him I see his new claw behind a rock which hid it from the front view.  I remove it (as it will only rot and foul the tank), gather up his old shell and put it in the opposite corner.  I had to herd little miss Instigator, and Macgyver (my other 2 Cherax Quads) to the other end, and construct new shelters for them all.  He barely fit under the old one there - it was Instigators place and she's much smaller than the guys.  Then off I go to find some lighting grid and make a divider to give him some space to grow without threat.  Nearly the whole time he's stressing and cramming himself into the corner.  Finally I finished and he made his way next to his old cave, legs flexing like cooked spaghetti as he tries to walk.  he stretches out a bit, seeming to relax.  I turned the lights out so he'd feel less "spotlighted".

I wonder how much he's going to grow with this molt?  Last time it was a sizeable amount - at least an inch over a 3-day period.  It's amazing to watch that.  How he will fare with only one claw, I do not know - the others are fully equipped with all their limbs.  They may have aided in the removal of his new claw, but it's likely that it just got caught against a rock or cave and in trying to extract it, it came off.  When I pulled his new claw out of the tank, it was soooo soft.  Nothing at all like it was a few months ago when he snapped at me, hard enough to draw blood then.

Only time will tell what kind of growth spurt he's gonna have this time - Should be interesting!

        Re: Rough molt....

If he grew an inch that would make him just over the half-way point to "full size".  I'm just glad they don't grow as fast as the Florida electric blue crays!  I've had Blindie (named such because immediately after getting him he was attacked by some sort of fungus or bacteria, and lost one eye over it.  I think it was something he already had, but the stress of purchase brought it to light),  for about 2 years now, and he was about 2.5 to 3" when I got him.

            Re: Rough molt....

There are a LOT of Aussie sites with receipes for Cherax Quads.  They're eaten over there the way we eat Procambarus Clarkii here.

They're bigger tho, so they probably don't have too eat so many of them!  Wonder if they taste the same....  If I ever get to Austrailia I'll have to try some out.

I'm gonna come over there and tell them myself!

I bet if you chopped off a piece of your finger and dropped it in the tank, those sweet little precious fishies wouldn't think twice about gobbling it up....

My GSP's bit my fingers more than once - and they were still attached!!  8O

                      Re: Rough molt....

Right now I've still got him in "lights out".Seems the larger they get the longer it takes for them to get around easily.  I did get some pics tho but I've got to run errands, then I plan to post them.

First thing this morning he was up on top of his slate cave, closest to the end of the tank.
Little miss Instigator was just outside her cave looking his way, and Macgyver was on top of her cave (which is the middle cave - right next to the divider), leaning up against the divider - looked like he was trying to think of a way to get to the other side where a tasty soft-shelled breakfast awaited...

I may have to pull Blindie from the threesome - with one claw and one eye, I feel his safety is somewhat compromised.  :(

                        Re: Rough molt....

Spot, you've mentioned putting in more caves for them to hide in etc. What material would you suggest? I want to put more hiding spaces in my tank as my crays are getting larger and beginning to cut off one another limbs. So something needs to be done to help divide up the space.
I've seen the caves they sell at Petco...but I'd prefer to go to the au natural route.

                          Re: Rough molt....

For that what I would do is hit a rock/landscape place or home depot/lowes and get a bag of large rocks - between golf ball and tennis ball size.  then got the tile department and get a box of 6" natural slate tiles.  Or for variety get the larger tiles and break them for natural looking edges.  Another source for slate is a tile outlet - ask if you can dig through their broken slates.  Often they will let you have them for nothing and then you already have that natural edge look on at least one edge.

Bearing in mind that 3-legged items don't wobble, place 3 rocks on the bottom, and a piece of slate on top.  If you have the larger rocks, place 2 and prop one end of slate on top of those.  Then you can angle slate and stones for differnet caves.

I've attached a pic of the little 2 gallon tank at work with caves made with a couple of stones and 2 small chunks of slate.  You can even see my little pal peeking from under one side.  It's not the best pic (taken with the cell phone) but you'll get the idea.

Awesome, I need to go by Home Depot Tonight. I'll take pictures of the final product. With three growing crays there need to be more caves.
How is your guy doing now? Hopefully recovered from the molt. My largest cray is preparing to molt again, wish he would let the other two catch up.

Interesting to read. I had a female yabbie in my 150 for a long time. She lived about 3 years but grew from 2" to 9" in that time. She would molt then pump up and grow. She also lost an eye due to a fungus. She died suddenly during a molt. She was a great pet, never touched any of the healthy fish, but she would chew on plants (real or plastic), driftwood, rubber suction cups, small children etc.

                              Hang on...I ahve pix:
