Vampire Shrimp

I've had this Vampire Shrimp for several years now, but it is usually pretty shy about being photographed. Finally got a fairly good pic!

Nice shrimp! They are some of the most interesting shrimp IMHO. I had two wood shrimp in my 60g but one died on me. The survivor was sorta white when I got him has now turned a light blue.

I like the wood shrimp too. I think they need a pretty well established planted tank with lots of places to hide in order to thrive. My vampire disappears for months at a time.

mine lives in his helicopter ornament. I used to see him come out and feed under the filter outflow, now I think he is coming out at night. I pick up the helicopter from time to time just to make sure he isn't dead. He is doing pretty good so far, tank is almost a year old now.

He looks like the kind of shrimp that would kick your *** for not doing water changes

He is actually fairly shy. Doesn't bother the fish and hides when I do water changes. Here are a couple of close-ups.

I got him from Ultimate Fish in June of 2010.

Wow - I still have this vampire shrimp, and I checked my records - I purchased him in June of 2010. That means he is about 10 years old! All of the websites say they can only live 2-5 years! I have him in a 75 gallon low-tech planted tank with peaceful fish.
