Re: blue "lobster" vs. blue crayfish

Nice pic.. kinda fuzzy so i can't quite ID it. Doesn't look like a Cherax though. It's possible that it may be a blue morph of Clarkii or Alleni.

Does he/she look like any one of the crays Here?

Not sure how long they stay soft, personally never tried to feel one up after molting. But the claws will grow back eventually over time.

Re: blue "lobster" vs. blue crayfish

Looks like you have a Procambarus Alleni (Florida Electric Blue).  She'll turn more blue as her shell hardens.  I hope you left her shell in the tank.  She'll consume it to get calcium needed to help her new shell harden more quickly.  She'll still harden if you removed it, but it will take a little longer.  If you left it in, don't bother feeding her til it's gone.  She probably won't eat anything but her shell until it's nearly gone and the uneaten food will just rot in the tank (unless your fish eat it). Usually it's 3-5 days and they're hard enough to be handled again.  Sometimes it takes a few molts for the limbs to fully come back.  If you can get a shot of her(him?) with the claw she does have showing, I can let you know whether you've got a she or a he.

Cool, thanks!  Will attempt to do so.

I did leave it in there - she doesn't want to eat it.  She moved her hiding place and is staying over where I can't really see her.  Her husk is just sitting in the front of my tank.

I definitely think she is an Alleni.  Same coloration, claw shape, etc.

Re: blue "lobster" vs. blue crayfish

I had a female once that wouldn't eat her molts.  She'd molt, then stay up at the top of the tank in the floating plants up there (hornwart, anachris, etc).  This may have been due to the other cray in the tank, maybe she didn't feel "safe" on the bottom.  Others I've had won't even touch shrimp pellets until their molt is eaten.  Maybe try pushing it close to where her new hiding place is.  If there are no other crays or other things in the tank that could hurt her, then I'd take it out in a few days if it's still untouched.

Re: blue "lobster" vs. blue crayfish

I actually "delivered" it to where she was hiding.  She ran away from it LOL.

But this morning I noticed it was all gone, so she must have devoured it in the night.

She is coming out a bit more to say hi to folks :)

Claw still hasn't grown much - can't wait to see her fully healed.  Is there something that speeds up crayfish in healing?

So how is she doing?  Did she ever finish her shell?  If her claw is rounded like the pic I posted, then she's a female for sure.  Males have more elongated claws in comparison.

Re: blue "lobster" vs. blue crayfish

                  Sorry,

She is doing much better!  She ate it finally, and her claw is slowly growing in.

                  She is ravenous though LOL.

I bought a very young one recently - it is in a small one gallon with a couple feeder type guppies.  I don't know if it is male or female (about 1.5" long)

But it is hilarious to watch.  It is determined to catch one of those guppies and digs little pit traps in the corners, then stands at the top and tries to jump down on guppies looking for food, but is always too slow.  Male or female, it has earned the name Wiley.  Like the coyote, only blue...

I have got to say one thing about it -

                      that crawfish knows perseverance.

I don't really name my fish, but few years back when I had a SA tank, my wife and kids sort of named fish after  themselves...LOL.  We would be like, hey look...JR is chasing Isaiah all over the tank and stuff like that.

Re: blue "lobster" vs. blue crayfish

I don't commonly name my fish either, but sometimes they just show enough personality that they earn one.

I named my male bettas - some as a reference to what their tank is decorated with - just to distinguish them, because red veil tail isn't very helpful when there are multiple red ones.  A couple though just got names due to looks/personality.

I have a red and blue crowntail who is absolutely gorgeous, and was the only one without a name until my bf looked at my desktop, which is one of my favorite musicians, Rogue from the Cruxshadows.  He looked at his spikey-I-am-in-a-gothband hair and then at the crowntail and thus he was dubbed Rogue.

None of the fish in my 30 have names, but one of my guppies in the 20 got dubbed Neelix because of his orange and black spots.

At my house the roomates kids has named the male betta's... the only thing that I dont like about their naming convention is that they always end up with females name...

                              LOL

Can't say much about that - I have too many red bettas to conveniently discuss them without names - so their tanks give them their names - hence Lilly for one that has lillies in their tank.

Cool :)  well we are down to one Betta in the house.. the other one decided to meet an untimely death :(  but that was a while ago.
the one we have right now is a red Betta..  Since I took over his tank maintenance he now gets a clean bowl every other week.. I dont think he had ever experienced that until I started taking over..
