  • Name that SHRIMP....

Self explanitory for the most part....I was at the LFS down here and saw some shrimp in a certain tank. I talked to the owner, he said they were a misshippment and I could have them all for $1.00....the lady behind me (we can call her elephant ears) literally DASHED over and started pressing her nose against the glass. There was a smudge. LOL. It was like a cartoon.

Needless to stay, she started saying weird things and these weren't worth that much but she'd "go ahead and taken them off his hands for 75 cents".
The owner didn't seem to care so he shrugged "okay". At this point, I said "that sounds like an excellent price, I'll take them all".
So, I got the shrimp bagged and ran to my car and sped home with my shrimp in my lap.
8O So here I am...with 5 new shrimp in an isolation tank.
They're big, lol. I don't know who they are or where they're from...but they look like they've got little feather fans on their claws...they perch themselves on the driftwood and catch things in their little fan hands and eat it!
I fed them some live brine and put them into fresh water and they are now a really pretty reddish color.

Soooo....I'm hoping that I got a good deal but even if I didn't...I already love them so I guess it doesn't matter.
I want to put them into my community and see them in action but I need to know what they're like before I throw them in there.

    Anyone have a clue?

Hey I know him...thats Frank....me and him go way back!

Seriously though it is A. Moluccensis, or Wood, or Bambo, or Flower, or Fan shrimp....Think these are cool? I have some A. Gabonensis -  same, shape, but blue or pink depending on mood, and up to 5" long!

those are bamboo shrimp, 5 for a buck, thats a very good price, but don't forget they are filter feeders... i don't think they would eat live food, and you also need a good flow inside the tank as well... a powerhead or two, thats where they like to hang out, and eat as well...

will they eat live Baby brine shrimp or do they just like green water ?
'Dear Lord,' the minister began, with arms extended toward heaven and a rapturous look on his upturned face. 'Without you, we are but dust ...'
He would have continued but at that moment my very obedient daughter who was listening leaned over to me and asked quite audibly in her shrill little four-year old girl voice, 'Mom, what is butt dust?'

They also can use their "fans" to pick stuff up off the substrate etc. They eat continuously. Unless your water is freakish polished you will be ok if you have fish in there. I over filter, and my Atyids find plenty to eat. However when it comes time to vac the gravel and the detritus gets stirred up they go crazy! Most of the time they are filtering for particulate stuff moving around. My impression is they eat anything that fits in their small mouths....

I think the  messages above might be confusing. The A Moluccensis you can find in your LFS fairly frequently. The A Gabonensis I saw only once a long time ago in my LFS. The rest I got online (Franks Aquarium, Arizona Gardens etc). They were only about 1.5" when I got them, and are now about 3"
