  • Water Lilies

Does anyone know how to keep water lilies from dying in the winter? I have three tropical water lilies and the pond they are in is already getting down to 50 degrees at night. Any thoughts?
Fish are people too, they just have gills.

Alot of people just replace tropical lilies every spring.

You can actually cut the foliage back and take them out of the water and put them in a greenhouse like environment until if warms back up. Replant it (feritlizer) and you are good to go.

Scarecrow: I don't know... But some people without brains do an awful lot of talking... don't they?
Dorothy: Yes, I guess you're right.

        Build this:

Or you you don't have the resources...

You can make a smaller scale version using PVC and plastic.

I just googled how to overwinter them and it said they can overwinter in a pond up to hardiness zone 9. We're in zone 9 so I'll see if they come back in the spring.

It'll grow back. My brother in law just leave it in his pond and come spring time they grow right back.

My tropicals are still blooming. Usually at least 80% make it through the winter. Yes they die back but they come back. If you have a deeper pond I would suggest setting them near the bottom of the pond as it gets colder.

Thanks! Mine are still blombing, too. :) They are down 18" and that's the deepest part in the pond. :)
