I actually run barely pads in all of the ponds I've installed over the years

Do you mean the filter needs to buried lower than the pond?

              This is what I'm thinking...

That will work perfectly the pressure of the pond will drain into the filter and the water level will be almost the same it will just take some measuring of the stand pipe coming up to the filter to get it to the same height of the pond water level

With that setup, the water level of the pond needs to be higher than the water level in the filter, which works fine for normal everyday operations, I guess.
But if that is all you need to do, you could very well have a side drain, just a few inches below the water line, much easier to install.
I thought you want to drain all of the water out of the pond sometimes?

I have an additional drain line located near the bottom that would allow me to drain most of the water out.

                    (diagram at reply #17)

I was thinking that a bottom drain would be able to naturally siphon more of the settling detrius than a top mounted side drain. I could be completely wrong.

I understand the thinking but I don't know if you can force detritus up hill toward the filter with only a few inches of head pressure?
Actually, in the picture, you have the drain line's outlet at a higher level than the pond's water level, you wouldn't get any water flow for sure.

Well, I definitely don't see how I'll get any detrius to the filter using a side mounted drain located near the top of the pond.

drains outlet is higher than ground level, but not pond water level. I don't see what you see.

I set up a temporary filter till I can get my 2" bulkhead and finish my plumbing.

I have just a couple plants in it already.

Trying to bury electric wire this weekend and do away with the orange extension cord.

Hoping to be ready for a couple more fish next week.

I visited a few other ponds over the weekend.

                            and

I like the flagstone around the top edge of the pond. The flagstone of both of these ponds are cemented together. Has anyone done this?
