  • where to buy

    Hi everyone,

I would like to set up a simple container pond, either a kiddy pool or a stock tank. I'm looking for something between 300 to 500 gallons. Any recommendations on where to look? I'd prefer to keep it on the cheap side. The stock tanks are nice and heavy duty, but from what I've heard I'm not sure they're worth the premium over a kiddy pool.

Gonna plant it heavily and stock it with a variety of natives and lesser sirens eventually.

I would be worried about the kiddie pool being punctured by rocks/sand/roots. I don't think you want 300 gallons gushing on the floor, or even slowly leaking. I would spend the extra money on the tubs. I have 2 300 gallon and just picked up another 100 gallon rubbermaid tub today.

Craigslist for stock tanks, that's where I got mine from.

In terms of kiddie pools I would only consider hard plastic ones. This will be kept outdoors and without heavy hardscape so I'm not too worried about leaks. I've talked to a few people online that have been quite successful with kiddie pools and do not feel the more expensive rubbermaid ones are worth it. I just haven't had any luck finding pools that size around here.

I will keep my eye on craigslist though, thanks for the tip.
