I helped a friend setup an aquaponics rig outside under a tree at his house in Austin.
He is getting a pond pump this weekend. He is also a complete novice and never kept fish before. I have never done anything other than freshwater, indoor livestock.
Needs some cheap, hardy livestock. Something that you can overfeed to generate lots of nitrates for the plants and tolerant to the hot and cold weather. I told him a bunch of goldfish or minnows would be good. Something considered a feeder fish that he can buy for $1 a dozen at a LFS.
He's going to try to grow strawberries, tomatoes, basil. Looking for any tips and suggestions for running something like this in an outdoor environment (minimum temps, heaters, predators, lids)?
