  • Do I have room for goldfish in my pond?

I have a 150-gallon stock tank pond which holds about 130 or so gallons of water.  My filtration system is a 320gph pump hooked up to a home-made Skippy filter; the skippy is in an approximately 5-gallon planter.  In the pond I have:

One RES turtle (about 7 inches long)
A bunch of mosquito fish- breeding like crazy, I am going to give some away.
A bunch of plants- the surface of the pond is almost entirely covered in plants, and there are plants growing in the filter too.

My water is tested every week and so far it stays completely in the clear.  There was a day, about three weeks into the pond project, that I had high nitrites, but I did a partial water change then and since have had no problems at all.  The water is clear to the bottom.  I do have string algae but I am fighting that with barley straw.

My best friend has offered me two large goldfish, comets about 6 inches long.  Do I have room for these fish?  I know goldfish can be pretty dirty.  So far the dirtiest thing in my pond is the plant life- the plants create more waste than the turtle or the mosquito fish!  I know they also oxygenate the water, though, and keep the quality good, so I'm not too bothered by that.

I want the goldfish because they are too big for the turtle to eat (I hope) but something that he can chase around and interact with if he so chooses.  I know they will also help to keep my plants in check, as the plants are getting really overgrown.

The mosquito fish have great big appetites- they eat my turtles leftovers and keep the pond free of mosquito larva.

Do you think I have room for these fish to live in the pond without screwing up the balance and health of the water?

i think it would be alright, but the turtle might still try and snap at it.

So how are the goldfish working out? I have a lot of preditors in my area so I was a little concerned about them being in water that small but the type of preditors varies a lot from one place to another. The racoons get my orandas because they swim slow. I have a little egret sometimes but he is too small to get my big fish. I have a friend in Hitchcock who looses fish to pelicans and other large birds. Your concerns over the water quality are well grounded but I keep mollies and gold fish in 1000 gallon ponds without any trouble.

The goldies are not working out so well.  They are a)eating all the plants, b)not friendly at all, and c)my turtle does not seem to like them.  So I think it is time for them to go on to another pond.

It's pretty depressing, because they are very very pretty and I love to look at them, but they largely don't even want me to LOOK at them.  If I m looking at them, they move underthe plants.  If I move the plants, they move again.  They are not at all human-oriented.  Gorgeous, but useless.  They will not come to the surface when I am outside, if ever.  They mostly stay near the bottom.  Today they actually swam near my hands when I was working in the pond, but that's the closest they've ever gotten.

The water quality is staying good.  The nitrates rose a tiny bit, but no ammonia or nitrite spike.

My pond is aboveground so I wasn't very worried about the local herons- they can't wade into the water here.

Sorry they are not working for you. I bet a buncha beautiful goldies won't have any trouble finding another pond.

I might have some over here on the other side of the world if it is too late for these. The problem this time of the year is catching any.
