    Re: Back to the bettas

I mainly go to Xtreme for their oddballs. One of the best stores for oddballs. Not so much of anything else.

So how long do you guys soak your driftwood? I have had it soaking in a big trash can since I got it. It seems to have absorbed a ton of water. It is a nice piece of manzanita and I cannot wait to put it in. I do not have anything big enough to boil it.

I have 2 spawns from this salamander male and his sister if you are interested, I am located out of Austin but I will be in Houston (Rosenberg and Richmond) for Thanksgiving. I can bring down fish for anyone else who is interested. I have about 150+ fish ready to go and about 500+ fry that are old enough to sell. Check me out on Facebook or email me if you would like to see my stock.

Edit: This is a giant pair imported from Thailand, however I breed every kind of betta and most colors.

King Betta are not true giant betta, instead they are Betta Raja x with Betta Splendens. King betta do not get as large as Giant betta and they are entirely different fish, Giant betta is a genetic mutation which allows an unregulated growth hormone to be released throughout the fish's life. I only have Giant Plakats at the moment but by next summer I will have more varieties of Giant betta fry for sale.

As long as it can fertilize the eggs, they can be artificially hatched. A lot of halfmoon betta eat their eggs so we pull the eggs and artificially hatch them.

Interesting. That is pretty sh*tty if they are doing that.

I artificially hatch all the time, just replace the egg eater with a good parent.

I mean cross breeding different species. I want to check out some of your Giants. Do you have a storefront in Austin?

Not a storefront but we have a huge double wide garage as our fish room. I was referring to that, you can cross different species but you will have to artificially hatch in the case of Betta Raja x with Betta Splendens, you'd be surprised how a lot of fish come to be. A big part of my breeding program is inbreeding the siblings x parents.

Diffrent betta complexes have diffrent breeding stratagies. Those in the macrostoma and unimaculata complex are large mouth brooders. They cannot cross with those in the splendens complex, which are bubble nest builders. However the coccina complez, which are mainly nest building cave spawners, are reported in some species to convert to mouth brooding, however they will not cross with anything from the splendens complex (which are imbellis "peaceful betta", smaragdina, splendens, ect.- many of these where crossed to get the modern domestic betta and all the varying colors, and shapes and sizes like the plakats). Betta albimarginata will hybridize with betta channoides (they are in the same complex and employ mouth brooding), but they will not breed with macrostoma (they wind up a nice meal though). Hope that was helpful.
