All the crappy petstore bettas come from Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia.
My favorite breeders are from Germany, Australia, Japan, Spain, Portugal, Switzerland, France and USA/UK have some decent breeders. Everyone has good fish, it really comes down to exporting/importing laws and an abundance/willingness to sell quality fish. Thailand is not known for selling their good fish to Americans, but who needs them. There fish are not that great, other than a handful of breeders, which is the case anywhere.

I imported 6 bettas - 3 females, 3 male ( 1 big-ear male, 2 Halfmoon plakat males) from a Thai seller on Aquabid.com. The quality of fishes i received just 6 out of 10 comparing to the listing pictures. Chose the best seller with highest rate but still its not worth paying 160 for 6 fishes.

The true giants top out with an overall body length from tip of of mouth to base of tail at 3.5-4 inches and are more heavily built fish especially at the tail. I forgot the name of the breeder ( he is from Thailand) but they were discovered in a lot of his fighting plakatts. They now have been bred for all fin forms. If yours is about 3 inches total length at 8-9 months he might very well be a giant or at least have genes along that line. They are impressive fish full grown. There is no mistake when you see full grown giant next to a full grown regular male. You'll need at least 2.5-3 gallons to house a single male in the long term.
