I'm not sure if this has been covered here or not, if it has, my apologies.
Most people pronounce betta as in Beta (Bay-ta), like how most people pronounce the the Greek letter, but that is not how it is pronounced! Betta has two T's, so betta is pronounced just like Jetta (bet-a), as in the Volkswagen vehicle.
As a side note, the Greek letter Beta is actually pronounced "veeta".
As yet another side note, my favorite betta species are Betta uberis and Betta imbellis.
