      Thats a nice light.
Have you started looking in to the plants you want? You need to look at what you may like to have and thin look to buy what they need to grow. in the long run this will save you money. By not over or under doing the lights, substrate, and chem. (co2. or seachem).

          Build stage : Lighting Planning
          Ok guy/girls,
so ive done a little bit of research , I have given you guys as much information to my understanding (please correct me if you thonk not)
neatly so readers can try and understand what im after with my tank setup.

** This is all information i have gathered and im not stating information for others to use as correct information unless confirmed otherwise by experirenced members.Im no expert so please help me and dont be shy to correct me. **

          My tank size

          72LX18X18
338 liters 100 gallons ( some websites give me 90 gallons)

          Lighting wattage
High -The plants require 1 Watt per litre or more to thrive fully.

Medium - The plants require at least ½ watt per litre to thrive.

Low - These plants can thrive and grow well in low-light aquariums.

          Selection i have chosen

Plants that require a little extra
:: The plants require at least ½ watt per litre to thrive.
:: CO2 supply is recommended to help plants grow with good colour and density.
:: Weekly maintenance times of ½-1 hour will be required depending on the growth and development of the plants.
:: Bottom substrate and liquid fertilisers are required. Special fertiliser is recommended.

          sourced from http://www.tropica.com/en/tropica-ab...ht-plants.aspx

Please also make sujestion if i should go LOW LIGHT and if so WHY i know the simple answer will be that they are easier but i am after a challenge :) ?

Why i have chosen this ?
I want to go medium because i want a nicely planted tank with medium lighting , i do not want high because i think its more advanced to run high and i dont want to go low becasue i do not want to use low light im up for a bit of a challenge and i want to learn as much as possible

          Globe type

Becuase i have a large tank i will be going t5ho globe t8 wont do the job

          Im thinking 6500-6700k bulbs ?
As for the chart my tank is 18inch high but the light wil be sitting at around 20" and on top of tank
Now il get onto plants soon , im just still reading up as much as i can and learning about lights. But so far im understanding that low medium are less demanding on co2 ( i will be running one ) and are easier to keep but higher lights 10,000k requre more co2 and maybe a bit more of a advanced experience ,because i have read if it doesn't have enough co2 it could leave the plants with to much nutrients and then alge will grow .

I want to go pink fluro i have been told this is good for plant grow due to the spectrum

(x4 being the slots il be using in my fixture )
          Aquazonic T5 high output light tube 24W Tropical Pink 24 x 4 = 96w
          Aquazonic T5 high output light tube 39W Tropical Pink 39 x 4 =156w
          Aquazonic T5 high output light tube 54W Tropical Pink 54 x 4 = 216w

          Globe selection
          * Aquazonic T5 high output light tube 39W Tropical Pink 39 x 4 =156w

          Why i think

My tank being 338 liters and with my research i have done it states 1/2 watt per liter so this is how i worked it out

          1/2w x 338liters = 169w

With the 4 39w t5 pink fluros that bring it to 156w which is close enough

          Fixtures

also hear is the website ive been looking at for t5 fixtures , might be cheaper to source parts and build my light the way i want it

Im interested in this fixture which is a 4 slot

it sits around 4"s about but i may need to modify it to sit at around 12" above so it will be medium intensity if i go by the chart ? Im a little stuck

this is the selection of bulbs i have to go with the light il need 4x for the lamp. I think the chart is miss leading and incorrect as it doesnt specify the watts?

          Thanks guys/girls

I am going step by step with my build. At this stage its lighting. I have chosen medium lighting and will choose plants to suit.

So ia there anything i was incorrect with?
please state otherwise if so as im a begginer
This is all what i think and to my understanding i want tp be corrected or brought to a better opinion if need being.

Oops... The easier thing would have been to rinse it in buckets before you put it in! But no putting honey back in the comb...hahah.

The only thing I know to do is water change as much as you can stand to, keep rinsing out that prefilter as it gets clogged, then just wait for it to settle. Sorry man.

I like the sand, though! Good choice for keeping it economical, we have pool filter sand in a couple of our planted tanks as well.

+1 and shut off all filters. You don't want sand getting into them. It'll kill them
