The latest issue of Amazonas has an article about research done at the University of Frankfurt on the freshwater fish Poecilia Mexicana, Loc.; Tabasco. In the experiment they put two males that are the same size, in a 10 gallon tank and let them fight. They then put the two males in a bigger tank with some females, to see who the females would mate with. If the females did not see the fight they would mate with the winner of the fight. If they saw the fight they would mate with the loser. The speculation is that the winner of the fight would be abusive to the females.
I have a different theory. I think that the fish’s instinct is looking for average aggression in mates. So in some situations they pick an aggressive mate, and in situations they pick a less aggressive male. This keeps the aggression level for the species at the best level for survival.
