I'm trying to contain my excitement because we're not out of the woods yet, but my sick boy is still alive! He's swimming happily and I think the spot on his back is better. I'm thinking bacterial since it's not cotton like. His tail has that orangy color like back when southwestern art was so popular and every where. And then down th center is a turquoise blue. He's the largest male that I have. I wish I knew how old he is. I hope he makes it.

Changing substrate shouldn't be a major issue with bacteria. They mostly live in the filter.

I thought maybe since the tank is fairly new it might cause a problem since bacteria would also be on the gravel. The puffers and otos seem to be doing well though.

Yes there are some in the gravel but 99% is in the filter. The new tank might have been a problem by itself.
