Collecting in Galveston

I just moved to galveston for college, and was wondering if there were any good places to go collecting fresh water fish/plants near here. My room mate and I were considering putting up a tank and it'd be awesome if it were mostly free .

For freshwater you'll need to drive a bit north, but really any permanent/semi-permanent body of water has great potential. Most of the plants you'll find will be in their emersed form on the edge of the water, so it might take a while for them to convert to their submerged form in your tank, but they'll get there.
