Any way of getting rid of Brown Algae(glass) gettin pretty tired of it.:furious:

Tank was just fine last week(was going to show progress of tank) did a water change which i know it messd up things for me

Heard it takes off after water matures but will it ever with weekly water changes??any other options other than R/O($$$$)???

How long have the tank been set up? If it is an establish tank already, then that is an indication your light bulb might need replacement. Silica from water change can also trigger this. Use Ocat or nerite snail to help with the problem.

Its been up for about 5mths. Might be bulbs but i doubt it not even 5 mths old.yeah was thinkin silica would be the cause....if nothing starts working soon will try otos

It could also be lack of lighting.

What color temp are your lamps? I've seen blue and actinic produce brown algae in FW tanks.

Funny thing is that tank looks horrible and thought plants might die but
they are doing great they are still growing might post pics soon just dont
like the way it looks

best if you can post a pic to easilier identify what you have. Continue to clean the glass, water change, and fert. Provide plenty of light and have a lot of patience.

Ottos eat brown algae.

Well its been almost three weeks i believe and i think wat really made a difference is changing the carbon in the filter and cleaning it as well looks like it really helps(not only ADDING CARBON which some of yall will try to point out) had not seen anyone tried that before with same problem in other forums so took a chance on trying it, took about 50% of water out and left it with less light (think it could have done better with none) didn't fill the tank right away which would probably have just caused algae to grow again. Well after that it only took about 2 day for most of algae to die:icon_hang:

Now why didn't i add water right away because i needed for the water in tank to age and grow bacteria again(More water More Time) im adding about 2gal every day it may seem slow but it will prevent from huge and frequent water changes(algae cleaning) if i would have filled it right away

Also added about 1 1/2 caps full of Excel didnt do much even tried spot treating some of it and would go from brown to white in few minutes which i thought had killed it so i took it off but day later whatever was left of white algae turned green and grew faster

Did not mess with the balancing nutrients just seems to hard and for me too expensive since i dont have all test kits YET

My fastest solution until now would be the 50% water out, minimal light, waiting a few days and adding water few gallon at a time :ocheck the web and see how many people have a real solution for this problem been all over and seen numerous amount of unsolved or even a single reply to the post which reads Brown Algae aka Diatoms
will post final results later

It is a common problem, you can use scrub it off as a temporary fix.

You say it is on the glass, is it spotts all ofer the glass? Are they kind of hard to scrub off? could be green spot algae (Choleochaete orbicularis) that is not getting enough light. If it is you may have low phosphate PO4 levels. Check your phosphate it should be at least 2mg/l.

If it is "brown algae" or diatoms, Ocats & Nerites.

I have it in some of one of my tanks and since my water sorce is the problem I live with it. I have a magnet cleaner to scrub my tank walls and I use Olive nerites/o-cats in all my tanks. This two prong approch will ussually keep the glass clean.

either way stocking your tank with nerites & ottos as a algae cleaning team can not hurt.
