A plastic one with algae on it!

Undemanding plants I've kept that have almost NO requirements are anacharis (elodea), java moss (although this is not planted in the substrate), naja (guppy) grass, vals (although they like a more mature substrate), and lots of different cryptocorynes. I'm not saying that ferts and CO2 aren't a huge help, and make the plants look a bit better... But I have grown those above with just a normal little fluorescent light strip.

Thought you said "a place to be dug into the gravel...?"

Duckweed comes to mind... Do you mean floating plants? Anacharis, najas grass, I've literally thrown those into a tank before and had them grow like mad. Hornwort, too. And java moss.

is it possble to put najas grass into like a holder or something to make it look like real grass is covering the bottom of the tank like a feild?

OH...! SA/CA cichlids? Whoops, didn't see that. It's 50/50 on keeping plants with them, and I'm being generous... :)

Personally, I abhor duckweed. All you need is one single leaf, and next thing you know your tank is covered and it's never going away.

Najas is more like a clumping plant than a lawn-like plant. For that you could try dwarf sag or micro-sword, but you might not be very successful with your fish and without higher lighting and supplements.

                supplements like???
and how would i clean my gravel?
and is it true tht black gravel can make your tank look less colorfull versus white gravel?

Yes, black substrate tends to absorb more light than other colored substrates. Typically white looks best because it reflects the most light yielding a brighter looking tank.

there are 2 or 3 nice java ferns but they grow slow.
Wisteria (hygrophila difformis) will grow anywhere and multiplies rapidly.
But I like CRYPT SPIRALIS for a tall tank.
'Dear Lord,' the minister began, with arms extended toward heaven and a rapturous look on his upturned face. 'Without you, we are but dust ...'
He would have continued but at that moment my very obedient daughter who was listening leaned over to me and asked quite audibly in her shrill little four-year old girl voice, 'Mom, what is butt dust?'
