  • Tank fauxpas

Well, this makes the second time.......
I love tall tanks and so when the opportunity presented itself,
I bought a 105gallon to replace my 55+ tank. Same 4' width, just deeper & taller. Well, I have the 105 in place and full of gravel and water but even standing on tippy toe, I cannot bury the plant root ball in the gravel.

Next time I am going to measure from the tips of my fingers to my arm pit before I buy the tank, so I know if I can reach the bottom or not.

Should I buy some SCUBA gear or is there a way to extend my reach that works better than a stick with a "V" notched in the bottom ?

P.S. I moved a lovely 36" log into the tank yesterday and today I have a 4" tiger pleco inspecting the tank, guess he he hitchhiked inside the log.

P.P.S. Last night SnowMan (My big Cat) jumped onto the 105 like he has done so many times on the 55+.... but I had not yet put the glass top on. He is still mad at me.

'Dear Lord,' the minister began, with arms extended toward heaven and a rapturous look on his upturned face. 'Without you, we are but dust ...'
He would have continued but at that moment my very obedient daughter who was listening leaned over to me and asked quite audibly in her shrill little four-year old girl voice, 'Mom, what is butt dust?'

I feel your pain, I have one of those 105 Oceanic talls myself, and as you know, I'm also vertically challenged. I even have a huge piece of sandstone in the bottom that I dropped, not where I actually wanted it, and have to work around it.

I keep threatening to get rid of it, but I really like the looks of a tall tank, so I just deal with it. Since I can't keep plants alive in it, the planting isn't a problem for me.

Bob, I have one of those 12" planting kits that Chris linked you to. You can borrow it if you'd like. I'll be home all weekend.

What are the facts? Again and again and again--what are the facts? Shun wishful thinking, ignore devine revelation, forget what "the stars foretell", avoid opinion, care not what the neighbors think, never mind the unguessable "verdict of history"--what are the facts, and to how many decimal places? You pilot always into an unknown future; facts are your only clue.

can't you just get a stoll to stand on or those 2 step ladder things!
          65 gallon - ADA 120p - planted
55 gallon - AGA standard - mix cichlid
          30 gallon tall - eclipse acrylic - semi-planted

          live and let live

Truth is the cement that holds the bricks and stones of a sane and civilized society together. Remove the former and the latter will crumble.

Yea, I hate that. With my 175 gallon, we use a ladder to reach the bottom with our hands. Sometimes I have to put my snorkel gear on, but very rarely. :-)

Well, I'm waiting until I get it finished.....
just realized I should have mounted the power strips to the back of the stand before I backed it up to the wall and filled the tank with water.....

Thanks guys, after looking at the pictures, I realized I had one of those long handeled grabber in the kitchen junk drawer. Works great for putting live crabs in a boiling pot.

                SnowMan is still pissed !:ertrink:

1st day it was cloudy 2nd day I put 2 powerheads on the UG filter and fired up the 2 HOB 400s and today it is crystal clear.

Good thing you found the grabber thingy! It's not so much fun diving into a half-full tank. Although it's better than diving into a full tank!

And that happened to my bird once... :( Her favorite tank to stand on was getting serviced, and I walked away from it for a second. She flew to what was normally a favorite perching place, and got all wet. Poor thing. I don't know who was more upset - me or her! At least she likes taking baths, though. I imagine your kitty doesn't like them so much. :)
