  • Attack of the plant monster.....

I feel like Batman vs Poison Ivy
I love java moss for my fry / bare grow out tanks but.....

My java moss is growing on everything
    filters
    driftwood
    plants
    rocks

Is there a criter that will eat it and not bother my other plants ?

A chemical that will kill it but not my annubuseses ?

The rocks & filters I can soak in a bleach solution, by I need help fighting back the evil lurking moss.
'Dear Lord,' the minister began, with arms extended toward heaven and a rapturous look on his upturned face. 'Without you, we are but dust ...'
He would have continued but at that moment my very obedient daughter who was listening leaned over to me and asked quite audibly in her shrill little four-year old girl voice, 'Mom, what is butt dust?'

My goldfish ate the pieces i put in their tank in a matter of minutes...

They dont eat my anubias, but will probably eat any other plant you stick in it. So you may try buying a couple feeder fish and see how they do

Goldfish will eat anubias if give the chance. They do not prefer it, but will eat it. Keep feeding them.

AN overdose of excel will kill most mosses, you have to be careful here. Try squirting he excel direclty on to the moss.

A bleach dip will work if you use enough bleach. I light dip mixture will not work.

No fish (to my knowldge) exists that will eat moss and not touch other plants. And if there is, I would like to have one as well.

True SAE will eat some other plants as well. Mostly fine leave plants and such. be careful what plants you mix these with.

Warm up the water a few degrees this will slow its growth and if the temp is kept at 80 plus will kill it in less than a month.
                  Cheers,

Are you sure it's java moss? While pieces can break off and find a new place to begin growing, it doesn't attach itself to anything. So it's easy to remove with your hands or planting tweezers. Any small pieces that remain can be sucked up with a syphon.

Could you be having a problem with algae instead of moss?

I keep my fishroom at 82F so there is something wrong with that statement. Eather not true or what I have is a mutation.
                      Can anyone confirm ?

My moss/algie is tangled up in unrooted plants like java fern & annubissis
as well as plugging up the impeller in my HOB filters and attaching itself to driftwood.

I've had trouble in the past with "SAE" sucking the slime coat / scales off my angel fish and worry about what other problems they might cause...

Perhaps I could set up a barrel of SAE and dump my stuff into it for cleaning like a river full of Pirrana.

That is usually CAE (chinese algae eaters) or not true SAE's

True SAE do not usualy have this problem

This honestly does not sound like moss. It sounds more like a form of algae.

Can you post a pic of it? Before doing anything to control it, it's important to get a proper ID of it.
