        I normally have the lights on from about 9am until about 10pm. should I shorten that?

          depends, are you seeing any brown, dying, or decaying leaves, or holes in the leaves?
          if so, then yes.

          if not, and the plants look fine, then your good.

              btw, just a word of advice, the 20" light is kinda small, length wise for the tank, i have found that a using a light atleast the length of the tank is best, but as thai suggested, if you can get a light that is alittle oversized on each end, or hang/suspend the light to where all areas of the tank are getting good light, then its much better.

              but if you just plan on putting them in or near the center of the tank then you will be fine, but i personally would get the 24" 65 watt 6700k freshwater aqualight, they are NICE!!! and they arent much more then the light you are looking at.

                That's what I was asking. And I agree with you there. :) The 20" will be fine, but the 24" even better!
