I just got my 50 gallon assortment. Other than two small problems (I'll let you know what happens when they get back to me on it), the plants are beautiful. I divided everything between three tanks and it's positively beautiful.

I'll probably do business with them again.

You know, fish are great. I love my fish. But what I really want is a monkey.

Quick question: is it possible to over-fertilize?

I'm no expert when it comes to planted tanks, but I imagine you can indeed over fert your tank...I'd go easy with that stuff...smiles.

You can over do on the ferts. If you dont get a proper balance then the thing you will grow the most is algae... all over everything.

let me see if i can find a good link on low tech setup and how to use ferts.

                    :)

                    Yes, you can indeed overfertilize.

"Lmrc" is right, Complexity is great at explaining things! :)

Basically, when you fertilize, you're replacing nutrients that are no longer present in water because they've been used up. But too much fertilization won't cause just excess plant growth - too much fertilization means ALGAE, and some other undesired results with your plants. There is also UNDERfertilization - ahh, the delicate balance. :)

When I get home, if no one has yet posted more of an explanation, I'll find a link for you that has pictures of plants in different stages and areas of underfertilization. And there's a great link that's been going around here on HFB that explains the many causes of algae, too, and cites different excesses of ferts as causes.

Is it possible to over fertilize? I believe so. You don't want to have to many nutrients that algae will utilize. The idea is for your plants to out compete them.

I use a conservative dose of Flourish, then will fall back on trace element ferts if plants are showing signs of specific deficiencies.

Low tech, non Co2 excel based: http://www.ultimatebettas.com/index.php?showtopic=24657

These two articles come from one of the leading guys when it comes to planted tanks.

Personally, I don't do ferts. in either of my tanks, besides the occasional seachem flourish in my low tech DIY Co2 tank, and occasional dose of Seachem flourish and flourish excel in my low tech non Co2 tank. I get good growth on both, dont fight with algae much, and like the easy maintenance. I would probably stick root tabs under stem plants that need the extra boost. But until I notice any deficiencies then I think I will keep it the way I am going. I have seen other peoples tank that have been setup for a long time and follow the same routine as me and their tanks are lush.
